Also don't forget the C4(S) cars have the added weight of the differential and drivetrain going to the front wheels. Also, the S bodies are aerodynamically less efficient than narrow body cars. (i.e. increased drag) I would assume that the ~1.25 inch per side increase in the quarter panel also adds some weight.

factory weights suggest the wide body adds 30kg and the 4wd adds 50kg.

Hence
C2 1370kg
C4 1420kg
C2S 1400kg
C4S 1450kg

1kg is 2.2lb, so wide body adds about 65lbs, 4wd adds 110lbs (over C2).

Hope this helps.

I've found some non-Porsche publications (e.g., Porsche 911 Red Book) don't explain that distinction causing confusion for readers.

Sachin - my guess is that the SA was confusing the new C4S with the older ones. In the recently released 996 C4S the engine is more powerful than the other cars (to the tune of 20 HP I believe).

I believe the 996 C4S comes with the same 320 HP engine as all the other NA 996 cars unless one orders the optional X51 PowerKit which is available on all of them except for Tiptronic models.

Wink

I can certify that my slightly chubby girl friend with wide hips is definitely not as fast as my other narrow hipped lady friend.
That's the law of physics, my friends! ;-)

Yep - you are right. Who knows what Sachin's SA was thinking?

Even with 320 HP, the new 996 maxes out at around 270 ft/lbs torque - that seems somewhat weak to me. Maybe the 997 with the new V8 will take care of that.

Bill,
As much as I love my 993s the 320hp 996 is much faster even if the torque is not much different. On the track the power difference is even more pronounced IMO. I just hope there aren't many of these guys racing the '02 model next year because on the straights they will leave me and most other 993's. An 993RS will have a tough time hanging with them also.

So what is the 3hp loss due to, I suppose the catalytic converters?

Greg,

I agree with you about the new 996 out running 993's on a big track. When I was at Sears I got into it with a new 996. Cornering was fine but the acceleration was difficult to keep up...actually I could not......ugggggg!!! <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />
