Default Consequences of removing sound deadening....

I have read alot of the archives about removing sound deadening and weight reduction but none ever say how much much louder the car gets afterwards. I would like to lighten my car for better track performance but the car is also my daily driver. What kind of sacrifices will I mak by removing the sound deadening in the rear passenger area? Also, what other weight reducing measures would you take for a car that is a daily driver but also frequent track car? I would really love Gt3 seats but the price is a bit high for me right now, any other seat suggestions?

In reply to your weight reduction questions:

Get the lightest wheels you can - weight reduction there makes more difference than elsewhere.

Try and check out Recaro SPG seats.

Also consider lightweight battery (Hawker Odyssey, Optima, etc)

Remove engine tray

Replace exhaust with lighter system. Cat bypasses, for example, will save you something like 20-30 lbs (I'm guessing here).

His list is quite impressive. However, I think that would be a bit extreme for me.

Nick,

Why not remove the front trunk carpet (leave the spare tire in for safety), install some relatively inexpensive race seats, switch over to the Supercup exhaust and take out the rear seats? I'll bet these would add up close to 100 lbs.

Also, are you towing your 993 to the track? If you are, keep the minimal amount of gas in the car for each run and use fuel jugs so you have replenishment right at hand, without needing to leave the track to fill the tank. Each gallon of gas weighs appproximately 6 lbs. That's another 50-60 lbs right there if you can keep the fuel at 1/4 tank or so for each run.

You are getting good advice here but no answer to your 'sound level' question.
As one would expect there is a tremendous difference in the sound levels between product based race cars and street cars. If weight reduction is really your goal I would recommend going after the items that are easy to remove and replace. I think the sound level increase may be more irritaing for the street than it is worth in weight savings on the track.

Mark,

I will not be towing to the track but great suggestions none the less. I have heard that the Supercups are quite loud, are there any quiter exhaust that are just as light?

Nick,

I'm not sure if there are any mufflers that are just as light as the 'Cups but quieter. You can always get the Car Chemistry inserts to reduce the noise. I have not tried them and don't know if they fit the current, third gen 'Cups. In fact, I'm not sure if they'll fit the first gen 'Cups I have. I actually have three mufflers right now: RSR's, the beautiful Mille Miglia's I bought from Randy M, and the Supercups. I'm hoping the inserts work well enough so that I can sell the other mufflers. Additionally, I'm guessing that none of the tracks I've been to seem too concerned about sound levels because there are some hellishly loud cars at these tracks, but if I get pulled over or run at a track with strict noise levels, inserts would be far easier and quicker to implement than changing out mufflers.

On the inside, the Supercups are not too loud. The worst part about them, as well as almost any other muffler besides stock cans or the RSR's, is the resonance at about 2700-3000 rpms.

On the outside, full throttle with the 'Cups is breathtakingly raucous. And beautiful.

Sound levels inside the cabin increased ALOT with all the sound padding removed. I can hear every little pebble that hits the floorpan or wheel wells. Also gearbox noise is much more noticeable when you install a lightweight flywheel.

I personaly love hearing all these strange little noises but I'm sure its not for a moajority of drivers.

I can confirm removing the sound deadening padding under the carpets makes the interior noise increase substantially. Once you put some carpet back in (like the RS carpets) you get some relief back. I like it but some may find it annoying. The LSD suspension design of the 993 already goes a long way to isolate noise.
