Post Minor Tire Damage - Dangerous?

Driving home today did a total dork move and turned a bit hard/tight on a right hander in our neighborhood and at about 15mph clipped the curb with the right rear only.

Very minimal scratch on wheel...can live with it.

Tire had an inch long...maybe 1/4 to 3/8 inch deep chunk out of it. The divot is sort of a long oval, maybe 1/2 inch at the widest.

These are 2 month old S-03s (no flames please) with 1200 miles on them.

Any danger of blow out?

I wouldn't take a chance with a low profile, high performance tire. Simply not worth the risk. Replace the tire, you'll sleep better.

I was once refused a repair by a tire shop on an 18" SO2 that had a nail about 1/8" from the sidewall. I assume if you hit the curb that the chunk is mostly out of the sidewall. I believe a responsible shop will advise you to buy a new tire. Ouch. repairable area

I'll second that. Tires are about the most important safety equipment on the car. A high speed blowout could write off the car, and maybe your life...

Sidewall damage is darn dangerous, more so than a nail in the tread which can in most cases be plugged.

Definitely replace. The fact that your tires are only three months old is a bonus in that the wear will be minimal on the other tires that have not been replaced.

Hi

Replace the tyre now while the wear is insignificant on the other rear. I had a similar problem but my tyres had 50% wear on them. Had to put 2 new rears on in the end even though 1 of them only had 50% wear.

I would change the tyre. You probably know that you have to do it but a bit of peer group pressure always helps! Seriously though, those tyres are the only contact you have with the road and it seems a shame to risk an expensive car and your life for the sake of a new tyre.

Mike,

Depending on who fitted your tyres, some of the larger chains provide insurance for the life of the tyre and offer free puncture repair or replacement.

I've never been able to use it on the P-car as I typically get the rubber and have it mounted by a specialist shop that (hopefully) won't destroy my wheels in the process. However, I did get a tyre replaced on my other vehicle at no cost when a nail went through the sidewall.

Good luck!

Mike

Sorry about the damage.

Maybe this will help:

the part of the curb you hit was the apex, right?

change the tyre

a year ago i was lazy (by a day) about doing a repair to a rear tyre on my MB E500 (built by Porsche) and ended up going backwards at 90 mph through a wall and totalling it.

silver lining: i now have a 993
