How is the word "bumperette" even remotely French? On the older cars, they merely called the rubber protuberances "bumper guards" - as that is what they are.
P.S. Please feel free to make fun of W and America (although W is a lot more fun - like the time he was addressing a group about "weapons of mass consumption" - true story).

it's just french sounding.. jeezzz.. it has that "ette" thing at the end and the overall feeling of the word is deplorable, The Suffix dictionary lists the suffix "-ette" as
suffix_
1._small
??diskette
2._female
??usherette
3._imitation
??leatherette
[From Old French, feminine of_-et_]
You guys can refer to something which is supposed to protect the front of you car in a collision as "small, feminine, and fake and derived from French roots" i'll call it a
Stoßfänger
Stoßfänger maybe sounds better.. something not so feminine and not so "imitation"

(this thread is supposed to be funny.. not all political and racial.. jeez)

Sorry Coleman,
I just don't get your buddy (not ranting here, just saying) at all...
I mean so what the word sounds French?
If some word sounds somehow Finnish, I can't imagine why I would be pissed..?
I know, I just have to teach to all how it's said with Finnish pronounciation (sp?), then we have no problems, us Finns are really tough people, we can take it some Porsche part sounds Finnish.
OK, everyone together: "PUMP (with "U", not "A" in the middle - PE - RET - TES" (pronounced similar way as in Spanish language).
Let's repeat: PUMP - PE - RET - TES!
There you go!

Petu,
I'm with you. It's about time that we declare a moratorium on these comments about the France and the French. National stereotypes too often become convenient targets, but they're really only fodder for the ignorant. Chirac is not France.
