Post Blown away by a Talon?

I had an interesting experience this afternoon, I have a 97 C4 Cab and I was out for a short trip in the town, top down.
I turned left at an intersection and a black Talon, you know the Chrysler econbox, came up to my back bumper as if to push me, some young guy 20-25 driving. In first gear, I sped up and he stayed, I sped up again, still right there. I pushed 1st to 2nd at redline and 2nd to 3rd at redline, by now I am going 68mph in town, too fast and enough for me.
He pulls beside me and goes by, like now. I was quite surprised all this but he then slows down gives me the thumbs up and take off. I did notice a racer type gauge pod on his A pillar and a big tach on the dash. I would say he was driving one of the cars that of the type you see in Fast and the Furious.
Interesting experience, I will save my racing for the track but still quite impressed at how much power was coming out of what had to be about a 2 liter turbo engine.
Has anyone else ever run into one of these "pocket rockets", I live in a small city in Canada and don't regularly see these cars.

All the best

Levino

You should be glad that you live in a small Canadian city.
Here in southern California you'll see "2Fast and 2Furious" being played out on the streets every Friday night. Don't bother me no more...kind of gotten used to it. No point of playing with those kids. Just makes me wonder with the amount of money they spent on modifying their "ricers" they could of gotten a real sports car like ours.

Oh yeah, these are all over SoCal. I have to grudgingly give respect to these cars when they are properly tuned and set up...what makes me chuckle though are the "Ricers" http://www.anti-rice.com/

(Unfortunately) there are many 300-400+HP worked up Talons out there. Whatever.

Given a choice between driving a 993 and a 400hp Talon, I'de take your 993

There is no question about which any car enthusiast would rather be driving. I'm sure the kid would answer the same if he was given the option.

I was talking to a friend of mine about why these kids spend all this money on what is virtuanlly an econobox and the answer I got back was insurance. The cars classify as econoboxes and have much lower rates than even a muscle car would never mind a Porsche.

In the 70's prior to my having P-cars I used to hop up small block chevy's not 2 litre rice burners.

I guess it is a changing world out there.

I don't know... I got blown away by a Honda 2000 yesterday at a traffic light. Kind of pissed me off, then I just let him have his fun and glory. Don't know what I did wrong, but his car seemed fast than mine. We sped off from the green and his simply out accelerated mine.

As my friend used to say, "ain't no thing but a chicken wing". Kind of stupid expression, but it meant to me that at the end of the day, which car would I want above most others - mine!

My C4S may not be the fastest, but it looks like the fastest ! I may just need to learn how to drive it better, too .

Eagle talon? Hmmmm Different strokes, eh?

Steve-you shoulda walked on that s2000 if it wasn't moddeed up since their torque is way down. Unless they have a supercharger/turbo maybe a different story(even that I'm not sure ie supercharger) but stock for stock you can walk the park with them. I have. Regards. Mike

Steve,

An S2000 is quite quick, but your C4S should be quicker. If he launched hard and you didn't, the race may have been effectively over right at the beginning.

I can tell you from experience that "blowing someone away" takes a very significant hp difference. We're sometimes mislead by how quickly we can pull away from traffic that most cars can't keep up.

Case in point: I've paced 993s in my 2002 VW GTI before and while I couldn't pass them, they certainly can't leave me in the dust either. I figured you'd have to get past about 70mph before the 100 hp difference starts to show.

I've learned a long time ago that there's more to my 993 that performance, it's just great fun to drive; even in a relaxed manner.

Thanks,
Peter

I find it far more interesting to have someone make an obvious challenge at a light, and then proceeding at a leisurely stroll (like you're oblivious to the challenge) when it turns green. It's fun watching people destroy their transmissions in cars that weren't designed to be stressed like a 993. It's also fun to see them avoiding you as you get further down the road because they've made a fool of themselves... I had a WRX do that to me yesterday.

Regardless, I agree with Peter... getting your car moving even a 10th of a second before the person next to you can make all the difference - regardless of how many ponies are under the hood (with certain exceptions, but you don't see them around too often ) With a quarter mile, it takes a lot of torque to make up that separation.

I'm sure the Honda's appreciate Italian tune-ups less than the 993.

This is a new expression to me, as an Italian I am not sure if there is derogatory comment veiled therein.
Please clarify,

Thanks

Levino, this is the highest compliment any Porsche driver can pay. It means taking a car that has been too pampered at low rpm with the engine lugging and building up carbon, especially on the back of the intake valves. You pour in a bottle of Techron, and drive the P*&%$ out of it for a tankful before an oil change. Like a Porsche was built to be driven. Do a search on "Italian" in the archives.

talons or DSM's are highly popular cars to modify considering for about 1500 dollars in modifications you can turn that econobox into a quite formidable drag car that turns out a 12 second quarter mile, i know they're not as pretty as a porsche but they can be modded to be fast...
