Blown away by a Talon?

Up here in Seattle, some kids invest big bucks in their Hondas, but a bunch of the rest are built up using stolen parts. Since that movie (that will go unnamed), the rise in stolen Hondas and Acuras here has been astronomical. The cars are stolen, stripped, then the parts are used on street race cars, or sold to other racers to fund the purchase of non-OEM parts.
I'm just glad they are not into Porsches! Remember "No Man's Land" or something like that with Charlie Sheen?!
Incidentally, there is a big push to open up the tracks to the kids to save lives. Street racing up here claims the life of someone every weekend. Very sad.

I have 96 c4 cab. I was challenged by Jeep Cherokee at the signal once (going up hill, too). I have no idea what he was thinking but he was no match 2 seconds later.

people often challenge porsche owners because they want to see the car move ? i mean woudln't you love to see a 911 gt2 just open up the throttle and push it is hard as it can go ? i would

Wow I am impressed with the way this post handled the street racing topic! No flaming or anything. On the 944 forum it gets really ugly when someone talks about racing.
P.S. you guys have beautiful cars.

I hang out at a shop where 450 wheel hp Civic hatchbacks are built. A turbocharged ls, gsr or itr engine is a thing to respect in the straight line when tuned correctly.

when those cars first came out in the plymouth laser/mitsu eclipse, i really wanted one. bang for the buck.
those engines are beautiful, too. they get about 1000 miles per gallon.......of oil at about 50,000 miles.
:-)
and now you have those little lancer evo's and WRXs (tuned) or STi's running all over the place. good thing the beauty of the 911 is more than the straightline.
if that's all that mattered, we'd be a pretty depressed bunch, except for the TT guys.

Levino -
Nothing derogatory intended - just the opposite. It's what more people should do with cars like Porsche's. I'm not sure how the term originated, but I look at it as praise, not derision.

Hi Levino,
What is a Talon? I haven't been living in the States for a while now. Is is it a saloon like a Scooby WRX?
In the UK, we refer to Italian tuning as a throwback to the old age of motoring when mechanics tuned cars by ear (e.g. balancing carburettors) or by tweeking something, trying it, tweeking it some more, etc. So, it's not at all bad to say this as, in our context, it infers that the person doing this has some skill to be able to tune intuitively.
Cheers,
David
PS I love getting idiots to zoom off at lights while I gently trundle off, making them look even more stupid.

A guy I work with has a fairly highly modified Viper. He has a friend who has a Talon. Typical Chrysler (lack of) paint on the hood - faded/missing. But he has done a ton of mods, and it pulls away from his Viper. He said the guy has lots of fun with Ferraris and others on the street. If you're really into ego racing, you can't do much better having a sleeper like that. What matters to me, and is far more rewarding, is pulling up to a much higher HP car on the track, and waiting to see the driver's hand pop out the left window to flag you by. I just had another wonderful weekend at Putnam Park, so I'm still a bit geared up. I noticed an E46 (?) M3 in my mirrors as I was waiting to get by slower traffic. I figured I'd have to let him through, but I wasn't sure. A few turns later, I put some distance on him. He only caught back up in traffic. THAT'S where it's at!
When I see riced up cars, I look for roll bars. That's a good indication if they're not only fast, but serious.

A friend of mine drove the Plymouth Laser / Talon back when they first came out. He swears that when the boost comes on, you would change lanes automatically due to torque steer.
As for straight drag racing speed, the 993 is on the "slower" side these days. Heck, the new Merc. S600 will easily outdrag a 993 with a 0-60 of 4.3 seconds! (Car & Driver recent test). A chipped WRX Sti or Lancer will also show the 993 it's (ugly) rear-end.
But like everyone else here, given a bunch of keys on a table, the 993's will be the one I pick up (unless there another set with a prancing horse on a yellow background w/o the words Stuttgart on it!)

If you weren't really careful, the torque steer could pull you around. That is, if your front wheels could get any purchase.

I had a 1992 Plymouth Laser All Wheel Drive, a 1995 Talon AWD and a 1996 Talon AWD when those cars were new as daily drivers. I was able to bolt on a solid and reliable 25 hp and similar torque for very few dollars (back then it was $1000, now it's probably $500 for the same parts). They were decent cars at the time, but I didn't keep any of them much past the warranty periods. Plenty of fun and they hooked up really well in all kinds of situations and weather.
Those cars came from the factory with restrictive exhausts, air boxes, and intercooler pipes. So, anybody with a $30 set of tools could bolt on power pretty easily. Lots of power left on the table by Mitsubishi...unlike Porsche.
The shop I consulted with routinely built the Mits 2.0 Turbo motor to have a reliable 300 hp (in a 3000 lbs AWD car). 400 hp was possible for not all that much money (compared to Porsche dollars) and they had extracted 500 hp from that Mits 2.0 turbo motor (which they admitted it needed to be torn down and rebuilt after every race).
So, now, 5 years after the last 2.0 Turbo cars were built, performance parts for these things are a dime a dozen and very cheap. Any kid can pick up a used '95 Talon with a stock 214 hp for $5000, blow another $2000 - $3000 on performance parts and have a pretty quick 275 or more hp car that weights 3000 lbs for well under $10,000. If someone knows what they are doing, 300 hp isn't unrealistic in those cars.
Granted, the car will blow itself apart in quick order with some abuse... But, they can be pretty quick in the stoplight races for a short time.
This post is strictly for informational purposes only (not meant to stir anything up) and our Porsches are definitely in a different league. But, it is very conceivable that we could get our butts handed to us in our 911's at a stop light by some of those ricer cars since bolt on power is so easy nowdays.
Not that we care anyway...!

Darwin at work, however. The human race used to be more self cleaning...now we regulate safety into everything, preserving stupid people who then procreate, thus propagating genes that should have been eliminated.

I hear 500 hp and 400 hp, but look at the torque on these cars. I have seen 1000 hp Supras run 11's!!! Because the torque bites. 1000 hp C5 or just about anything with torque will run low 10's or better. Ricer's are everywhere not just Southern California they are at every intersection in St.Louis. I have had Modified 300zx's, Honda's, Acura Integras and so on try to race my 993 when I had it and it was a joke off the line and got worse when we started accellerating. Here very few cars are that fast and the ones that are last about 5 hard runs and the engine has to be replaced. LOL
If you wanted a Fast staightline car buy a Cobra kit car with a 427 for under $25,000. The car weighs 2700 lbs throw on a supercharger and hold on for dear life. Or buy a gutted CRX do an engine swap and OVER boost the car and have fun for about 2 weeks before it detonates.
