Question M Engineering Tuning Issue

Picked up a M Engineering Stage 1 93 tune for my 2024 992.1 base (very low miles, car has always run perfectly stock).

First impressions are solid. Definitely noticeable power increase, PSE is significantly louder, and turbo noise is much more pronounced than before. Overall, it feels like the car woke up a bit.

That said, I’m still getting used to the sound. Around my neighborhood, especially in Sport mode with PSE open, it’s borderline loud enough that I start wondering if I’m drifting into “that guy with the loud Civic” territory… which I’m trying to avoid. I’m assuming this is just me calibrating my ear to what a properly tuned PSE should sound like.

The one issue I’ve noticed is a slight hesitation/stutter right after startup. For the first 5–10 seconds of driving, the car feels a bit jerky, almost like it’s not fully settled. After that, it smooths out completely and drives perfectly. This wasn’t present on the stock tune.

I haven’t reverted back to stock yet to isolate it, but M Engineering did send a revision that improved it slightly, though it’s still there. They’ve said it won’t cause any damage, so for now I’m running it as-is.

I’m also curious if this is something the PDK will adapt to over time, as I’ve heard mixed opinions on how much adaptation actually occurs with these tunes.

Overall, I’m happy with the tune, aside from that low-speed stutter.

Curious if anyone else running a similar setup has experienced this or found a way to smooth it out?

I have the same thing. Literally back out of the garage, put it in drive and it feels a little jerky as I start moving for 3 seconds and then all is fine. Figured it was normal for the tune and I never worried about it.

If you are asking yourself "is the car too loud for my neighborhood" you already know the answer. Revert to NORMAL when in neighborhood to keep the peace with everyone.

I have 2 tunes from different companies (not ME) and no drivability issues at all with either one. I too find the 100% open valves to be a bit much at certain RPM.

I don't get the whole noise thing - but apparently I'm in the minority. I'm happy for my cars to be quiet and carry a big stick (which all 911s do, regardless of how much noise they make - or don't make).

My daily driver is a 2021 Cayenne GTS. I'm never outside of the car when it starts as I'm the usual driver, but my daughter took it to school the other day and I was in the parking lot when she started it, standing about 50' away. I never realized just how loud it is during the emissions cold start warm up. In my opinion, a bit obnoxious.

Same story when driving down the road, under a steady pedal it is pretty quiet but even with PSE turned off, if you step on the gas and the car downshifts, it just lets out this brapp, brapp, brapp sound as you blow by other cars. I find it a bit embarrassing. Can't the car just do its thing and let the people you are passing see you blow by them? Why the need for the racket??

OK, now I"m going to get flamed ...

thatswhy I finf it better to keep to skip the open valve tune and use a separate valve controller...now you can have it OEM quiet or as loud as you want and anything in between at any time. I call the valve open mode the car show mode ;-)

One tune has an exhaust valve mod that varies with RPM so it's more like a louder version of stock.

Not true at all my friend - I just have a bit higher relationship quality with my neighbors compared to being out in the wild. As an example; if my close neighbor next door made a rude, judgmental comment I'd likely just let it fly over the top of my head - I know he's generally unfiltered but an all around great guy and phenomenal neighbor who would do anything for me. If a stranger did the same, however, I'm likely to call them on it.

I don't have the M Engineer tune but I am stage 2 992.1 C2 and car runs smooth and never had that jerky that you are talking about. Maybe you should get that check as I don't think that is normal.

The stuttering is a pretty consistent issue with the M-Eng tune. A lot of people complain about that characteristic, which isn’t to say it’s not eventually rectified much of the time.

Not sure why ppl are venting publicly rather than iteratively working with the vendor to resolve. Even OTS tunes need multiple car-specific adjustments, and knowing M there’s no world where random stumbles are acceptable.

ps No affiliation, just a 2x happy customer…

I’ve read that thread and I also posted in it. Its existence doesn’t invalidate my comment however. I know many, many people who have experienced the issue after tuning with ME. We can even look at @BarryC’s experience where the tune referenced in this thread caused issues while another one did not (…and his car has been running great since changing tunes). I’m not here to knock ME; quite the opposite as they do support the community with their endeavors. I have no dog in that particular fight with them, but I’m also not going to ignore the reality that the behavior is a pretty common complaint. I don’t subscribe to the idea of the suppression of vocal frustration(s) about issues in order to curtail open dialogue, regardless of how critical that dialogue may be.

Wow. Didnt say anything about invalidation of your comments. In fact I didn't say anything other than post a link on the topic. Was also hoping it would save you for having to search on this question for others in the future. Also, who was trying to suppress any discourse here?
