Watch some videos, follow the coding thread. Someone just posted a list of common mods. Start with some easy things
if you are computer savvy it will unlock pretty quickly.

You don't need German, that is only for programming mode and you better be damn sure you know what you're doing when clicking around in there.
General maintenance, clearing codes, re-learns etc are all done in english and are pretty straight forward.
If your cars are all stock, piwis might be overkill, unless you're doing your own maint, I would save your money and just have a normal code reader.
