Default SmartTOP install

Got a SmartTOP from my wife. Any tips to installing on a Targa? I just tried to get the back panel behind the seat off and cannot seem to budge it. Looking for any helpful tips for the install.

I've done four Smart Top Installs, but all were Cabs, no Targas.

Looking at the photos of installation, the Targa looks far easier to do than the Cabs. Have you gone to this page?

IIRC the Targa is a much easier install than the cab.

Start here (IDK if the issue you're having is the same as in these pics): https://rennlist.com/forums/992/1200...ial-diy-3.html

I installed the SmartTop on my 992.2 Targa 4 GTS two months ago.

I will post some pictures.

First, I printed out the install manual, and printed out the photos separately:
https://www.mods4cars.com/sms/db/sma...l_targa/en.php

One suggestion before you start:
— connect the SmartTop module to your home computer to make sure it has the most current (and probably final) firmware.
— my module had the most current firmware (v1.06, last updated in 2023), so I did not have to update it

Back Panel Removal

I had to pull down hard on the two points marked. Also see how the panel is attached to the frame

Disconnecting the Wiring Plug (the part the SmartTop harness connects to):

— the hardest part is seeing/accessing the small red “locking tab” that holds the plug in place
— the red tab is underneath (on the bottom of the plug), so I could only see it with a small mirror and a flashlight
— to disconnect the harness, the red tab has to be pulled out (only 1/4 of an inch)
— I created a tool out of a bent paper clip to pull out the red tab
— after you pull out the red tab a tiny bit, you then press on the black part (see photo) to release the plug

Other Install Photos

One final note: some people keep a USB cable permanently connected to the SmartTop module for future updates.
I did not connect a cable:
— I doubt any more updates will be made
— the module is easily accessed by pulling off the back panel

So do I have to program this on my computer first or does come plug and play out of the box and not need to be programmed?

@Guzzgreg Martin went to a lot of trouble. Instead of being snarky, read it again if someone says it is spelled out.
