Brand New 911 Targa 4 GTS Just Stalled Mid-Drive
Over the weekend, while cruising in my brand new 992 Targa 4 GTS, the car suddenly stalled while driving. The engine completely shut down and there were some unusual noises coming from the rear engine compartment. Moments later, several fault messages appeared including reduced engine power fault, auto start/stop fault, high voltage critical battery fault, and high voltage critical battery fault.
Shortly after that, the battery died entirely, and once the car was on the flatbed, the tranmission locked itself up. I still can't believe this happened on a brand new with just about 400 miles on it. The thought of this occurring at highway speeds is honestly concerning. As of right now, the car is fully locked to a point where I can't even manually unlock it. Extremely frustrating experience so far and huge dissapointment. Thinking back, I am wondering if the RPM fluctuation issue I noticed earlier might have been an early indicator of this problem. Has anyone else experienced anything similar or have any insight into what might be causing this? What do you guys think of this?

I had mine throw a bunch of codes and go into limp mode 5 miles into my first drive; however, ended up being a faulty steering angle sensor. Your issue sounds like it could be a high volt battery failure as that would affect both the turbo and the transmission (given the electric motor in it). Hopefully its just the battery and not something more serious with the engine. Keep us informed what you learn!

Hey bud
It’s just so frustrating hearing the exact same thing for someone else. I made another thread called 992 GTS Electrical System Fault where basically the same happened to me. Stalled, car shut down, can’t change transmission, flatbed back to dealer.

My dealer said that the eTurbo and another piece needed to be changed with there weren’t any in stock. Still waiting for replacement parts, 45 days after incident. Car is at the shop, unable to be used. It appears like the eTurbo failure is somewhat common as I’ve read about 6-7 other cases when mine happened.
Wish you better luck than mine ..

I’d suggest to check the other thread as well; 992.2 GTS Engine Failure

That sucks. Sorry to hear that - hopefully the dealer can sort it out quickly for you and it will be trouble free thereafter. I Turo’d a 2018 Targa 4S (not sure if that’s same gen or not) for 3 days over the summer and I drove it pretty hard for almost 450 miles - it ran flawlessly and was by far the best car I’ve ever driven - I aspire to get one myself so I hope your experience is just an anomaly.
I know its a biased sample size and its unrealistic to expect perfect reliability on a 1st year powertrain, but good heavens. Poke around a bit and there are WAY too many of these stories with the new GTS. Feels like this one is going to have some growing pains.

exactly why I waited for the Targa 4S to come out. I was really nervous about the hybrid technology and I wanted to have one of the last non-hybrid 911s
@Bob Z. I hope so, but IMO it is something major that might have gone wrong because I have never seen anything like this before. So curious to find out what the issue is, but will keep you guys posted
@Raul.R Yes, its so frustrating!! It literally took 5 hours to get roadside assistance to get the car on a flat bed and to get it out was definitely a nightmare as the car would not go into neutral. I hope to hear some good news from the dealer.
