Default 992.2 vs...

To be clear- I am overjoyed with my 992- a technical and performance tour de force. That being said I woke up my 04 boxster from its winter nap yesterday. I now realize that too is a phenomenal vehicle. Light quick and toss able it is also a joy to drive. Steering so much more responsive and a 5 speed just makes it more engaging. The 992 is a DD but now on weekends now I have to choose!

I get it. I have a new 992.2 that I bought as a good weather daily. I'm two weeks in and loving it. But when I want the full sports car experience, it's my Cayman all day every day.

718 is a fun platform and going back and forth makes you appreciate the 718/911 that much more.

I have a friend who ordered and waited for a beautiful 992.1 Cab . After about a year he started to complain it was"too big" . I thought he was nuts . Granted it is bigger than the smaller platform 911's of the past but for car of its size it really maneuvers with agility . The complaints grew until finally he traded it for a CPO Spyder . Some people feel more at home with the smaller mid engine vehicle . To each his own .

New cars are capable and comfortable but sterile compared to old cars, especially aircooled.
I enjoy my 992 a lot, but if I had to choose one, it wouldn't be it.

I am thinking about this more and more with the thought that my 992T would be my last ever car. But never driven anything pre 997.

If you had to choose, what would be your one and only 911?

My 992.2 is the best car I've ever owned, but it did make me wonder what else was out there that would be a variation on the sporty experience. I have a Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid for the front engine V8 sports SUV experience and my road trip car. The 992.2 is the good weather daily. I wanted to add a lighter, manual transmission 2-seater but was afraid the Cayman might just feel like "junior 911", and wasn't sure if a 3rd Porsche was the way to go. I have mistaken Caymans for 911s myself before from at a glance, so I wanted a different look. The Cayman and the Lotus Emira came up in a lot of head-head videos as the last of the mid-engine manual transmissions that may ever be made. Both have just been discontinued, and now with tariffs halting dealer restocks of either, it was grab a new one from a lot now or never.

I love the Emira. It's 250 pounds lighter than the 992.2, 4x wishbone suspension, hydraulic steering, supercharged V6 manual. It's a much more raw and "edgy" experience than the 911. Much less refined, both in good and bad ways. Much more of a weekend backroads or track car than a daily or road trip car like the 911, and considerably slower. But if you're looking for something drop dead gorgeous, crazy fun, and Cayman-ish price level, it's worth a look.

No doubts, a 993
I have a 356 Speedster, a 993 cab4 and I had a 991.2 cab4, this afternoon I'm picking up my new 992.2 GTS cab4.
If I had to keep only one I would keep the 993, perfect, usable, fun, super reliable (never broken down).
The Speedster is for a concours d'elegance and the 992, as an old Porsche enthusiast told me: "this is not a Porsche... it's a Mercedes with the Porsche crest on it" but that's okay.

I agree. I currently have a 992.1 Carrera T and a 1990 C2 964. If forced to keep only one, it would be the 964. The T is amazing, comfortable, fast, etc. and super fun to drive, but it cannot compete with the looks, build, sounds, smells, and feel of the air cooled cars in my opinion. It's taken me 25 years of owning and driving every generation and almost every iteration of 911 to finalize on these two cars as the perfect mix for my air cold and water cooled fix.

The car in my avatar: a 911 S/T tribute. A race car adapted for the road.
I've owned many aircooled cars and there are more I'd love to buy/build, but if I could only have one this one would be it.

I've had four 993s. Loved them all. Maybe because I've been there done that, but it's not top of my list.

Yep, there's an arc to 911 ownership: we get lost chasing power and capability only to return to the purest expression of what a 911 is. It took me around the same time.

Yes, my 993 was a great little car and you can't beat the looks, but the GT3 has been with me for almost 19 years and 161,000 miles (yes, it's a daily driver). So far this looks like this is it, but who knows...

I should add, it's really the motor that makes this car.

Couple of months ago I purchased my 1st 911, 992.1 Targa 4S. Prior I had owned Boxsters since 2007. Watching the 981 Boxster GTS, which I owned for 9 years, drive away with the new owner was a sad day. That car was so much fun to drive and had the greatest sound. I always wanted a 911 to see what I’ve been missing. The Targa is a great car and the little I have played with is fun to drive. It’s also very fast especially compared to the Boxster. Part of the reason I’m easing into the fun stuff. The huge thing I really miss is the sound. The Targa is actually quiet even in sport exhaust, maybe it just that the BGTS sounded that great. Lots of flexibility in the Targa so we’ll see over time how I adjust.

Always had a sweet spot for the Targa. I hope you have a blast.

At one point I had 3, the 968 was in the worst shape but easily the most tossable and fun to just wring out. It was refreshing to have something lighter weight and low cost. But the 993s smoothness and power I would choose everyday so kept it. But frankly as I await a T delivery now (from my 992.1 S), I will always keep a new one for comfort, safety and daily and then use the 993 for weekends.
