Default Tire Pressure

Got a message last night that driver side front tire is low.... its a yellow color and say minus 4 on that that tire.... Inspected the tire and does not appear to be a nail or anything in the tire.. Checked the tire pressure on both front tires and the one in question is maybe 1 PSI less than the other front one.... Do you know what -4 means? could this be a TPS error??? thank you

There are air pressure targets you can set in the PCM based upon tire configuration (summer/all season, sport/comfort, etc) -- when the actual tire pressure deviates from those, I believe it triggers the message.

thank you... Took it for a quick spin this morning and no more message!!! I guess it was a fluke or error on the TPM system.... One year service is on Monday and will let the dealer know...

This literally happened to me the other day and the light is still on but pressure is good. I will add another 1-2psi and see if it makes the light go off. Just odd that it says -4 or -5 but it actually isnt THAT low.

Pressure is good relative to what?

The reason I ask is there are 3 different sets of parameters in TPMS for tire pressure corresponding to Full Load, Partial Load, and Partial Load with the Comfort setting checked. IIRC, the parameters for those modes are 37F/48R, 34F/38R and 30F/32R respectively.

For example, if you have your pressure set to what you think should be correct for partial load, but TPMS is set for Full Load, then your settings will be too low as far as TPMS is concerned and you'll get the light. The same will apply if you are inflating to Comfort pressure but TPMS is set for either Partial or Full load.

You can check in PCM by going to Settings/Vehicle/Tire Pressure to see if your actual inflation pressures match up with what TPMS thinks you want them to be. Just a thought.

I got a similar message today. I assume the “-4” just means it’s 4 psi below the target pressure…not an absolute pressure of -4

Interesting! I did not know this. Still learning this car (recently purchased), and I've been a long time BMW guy. I will have to check my PCM and see!

Yeah I'm in the same boat. Recently purchased so still learning. I went in to the PCM and changed the tire settings to "Comfort" and "Summer" and now my tire gauge reads +9 front and +13 rear.
I've thought about letting some air out of the tires but I figure it'll happen by itself over time.

The car is at the dealership right now to figure out some issue going on with the display so I'm curious if they'll adjust the tire pressures as part of their "160 point inspection"

You should try lowering the tire pressure to the Comfort/Summer values to see if you like it! Your tires will not drop ~9 psi until at least many months from now, so worth experimenting. Many 992 drivers, including myself, prefer lower tire pressures because it improves comfort. See: https://rennlist.com/forums/992/1427...re-advice.html

I prefer Summer tire pressure: 33 front / 38 back. My dealership service visits would restore my tire pressure back to high values. I now instruct them to leave it alone.

I agree with mikey94025. If you're going to set PCM to Comfort you might as well lower the pressure to the appropriate level. Inflating to a different pressure than is appropriate to the setting seems counterintuitive to me.

It's likely that, unless you tell them otherwise, the dealer will inflate your tires back to a "full load" setting anyway as they always seem to do that. I suspect it's a liability issue.

Yeah I picked up my car yesterday from the dealership and they set the tire pressures back up to max (which is crazy high) lol. So I'll be dropping them back down to the comfort settings.

Default Temperature

Note for setting tire pressures - The manual states a specific cold tire temperature (68F in mine) that corresponds to the recommended tire pressure. Comfort, partial load etc. etc. After years of occasional low pressure alerts in the winter, I paid attention to the temperature when filling to the prescribed tire pressure. It works.
