Default Door panel replacement - welding needed?

My 992 GTS is currently in service for a passenger door panel replacement due to a rattle. It's taking longer than expected and was told were waiting for an outside vendor to come and weld a part of trim to the door panel. Anybody have any insight with this?

I have no insight other than WTF. Sounds like a weld in the door structure failed. Not something you would expect considering the high level of automation/robotic welding on the assembly line.

They are likely referring to plastic welding, as much of the door card is plastic welded together. You can’t replace parts of the door card without grinding the plastic weld, replacing the part and plastic welding it back together.

Relax! That’s not what they mean.

These panels used to be screwed together in the 991. Now they use plastic clips. I had a bad door panel rattle which required an entire interior door card to fix. The tech showed me where the screws were now replaced with plastic tabs which break easily.

Most of the door panels/sections are actually welded. They can’t be unclipped in the traditional sense. They have to be drilled or dremeled to remove, which is why the dealership ordered you an entirely new door card. Upholstery shops like Exclusive Option have the capability of making changes without replacing the entire door card.

Thanks for the responses guys! I guess I was worried over nothing. Now if only the service department would get moving on it, it's going on 3 weeks...

Any time! Here’s a video to show you how it’s done at the factory:

I took my 992 into the dealer a few months ago related to a driver’s door panel rattle and when I picked it up, the rattle was no joke 100 times worse than when I dropped it off.

When I got home I took the door panel off to see if I could see anything obvious like a clip that wasn’t reinstalled properly.

But I noticed that they removed the plastic welds and put in three screws with washer into the plastic. 1 was loose, so I retightened it, and 1 was stripped and cannot be fastened securely. So, in the interim, I just wrapped the washer with some Tessa tape to keep it from rattling.

I’m not really sure how to follow up with the dealer as I don’t feel like this is a proper fix.

Using self tapping screws is a regularly utilized way to secure trim. I used the same method on my upper trim.

That said, you can use epoxy - another commonly used/permanent method - to secure the screw/trim. It’s not worth taking to the dealership.
