Default Automatic Wipers Question

Does the owner’s manual stipulate that the wiper **** mist be at position 1 before starting the car, otherwise the automatic functionality doesn’t work?

I was driving today, and it started raining lightly.
My automatic wipers did not come on.

I do have windshield protection film.

I was wondering if the film is inhibiting the sensor from working, or if I misunderstood how the system is supposed to work.

Here is the text from the online owner’s manual:
…
  • At a driving speed below approx. 2.5 mph ( 4 km/h), rain sensor operation is activated automatically when the windshield wipers are switched on.
  • After exceeding a speed of approx. 5 mph ( 8 km/h ), the system switches to the preselected wiper setting.
  • If the wiper lever is already in position 1 when the ignition is switched on, the rain sensor remains activated at speeds above approx. 2.5 mph (4 km/h).

No, I believe the automatic wiper lever will turn the automatic rain sensor on and off even while the car is running. As someone would expect.

The owner's manual lines you quoted apply to the Setting Rain Sensor Operation section before them. I've read it carefully and I think it describes some over-engineered rain sensor operation. It seems to say that below speeds of 2.5 mph and you turn the wipers on, to any position, then the rain sensor automatic feature applies (even positions 2 and 3). After you exceed 5 mph then positions 2 and 3 change to fixed, non-automatic speeds. Next they have to explain how this over-engineered feature works if you already have the wipers on and start the car (i.e., because speed 0 < 2.5 mph): Position 1 stays in automatic but Positions 2 and 3 do not run in automatic until you change the wiper position. Phew, this must be fun to QA.
