In three years, the property tax on that $5 million dollar house alone pays for a brand-new Carrera T in cash. This is why I think buying a house in the Bay Area is plain stupid from financial standpoint, unless you lived in it for 30+ years and the property tax is not re-adjusted to the current transaction levels.
Yet if you put it up for sale there will be 10 offers, all cash, all over asking price (ask me how I know). There's a lot of money there and property taxes are a non issue.
That's a conversation my partner and I are having if it's worthwhile buying in the bay area (certainly not Palo Alto) vs buying an investment property instead, considering the taxes I pay as a non resident alien here!
You're going to laugh but...
We have homes in Salem Ma, Savannah Ga, and (wait for it) Omaha Ne. Omaha is the easiest place we live with the best restaurants, bars, shows, etc... And we're waiting for offer on the below with 11 acres of woods 10 minutes from all those good things. I see what people are paying elsewhere, including us in Mass, and it kills me.
To the folks wondering how one would figure out where you live based on just a picture of your house and car: look up Geoguessr videos. The people that are good have the craziest details like tree species, local building styles, what utility poles look like, etc.
I can't answer the why, but finding you from a photo is 100% in the realm.

Literally anyone who sees you driving down the street can run your plate and find out where you live.

Most people are not that important to go through that much effort to find, and if you are worth that kind of effort, you surely wouldn’t be the type on RennList bickering over GT3 ADM’s and configurator specs. There are far easier ways to find someone than cross referencing geography. I can find most people without ever seeing their homes.

Well, in theory yes….but no. Not everybody has access to JDIC, CHRS, Palantir, the DMV system information, etc. and there is case precedent involving confidentiality. Sure, there are apps out there, but most aren’t easily accessible.
If people want to protect themselves, put your homes in a trust [not named after you], seek assessor confidentiality (..which removes your information from the public tax assessor’s page), use a P.O. Box for your vehicle registration, etc.
