I have a manual trans S, and I love to occasionally drop it into 2nd gear when going around 35-40. When road conditions permit, I will then give it the gas till around 70. Talk about power, thrust, and response, man it is almost scary as the revs mount. Who says you cannot enjoy the extra power of an S on the street-bah humbug!!
Just normal driving in 2nd when I probably should be in 3rd- everything is just magnified, at least to me, the rumble, the response, just an overall feeling of power without touching the gas (screw gas mileage).
I mostly stay in 3rd when driving on the streets, but I really enjoy the do enjoy the occasional jaunt in 2nd gear-sometimes going all out to 70 or so, or just blip it to 50 or just a quick touch of the gas. Tons of fun to be had in 2nd. 3rd is similar, but you need to be going at much higher speeds to do the same and that is where you need to be at the track.
I am a 75 yr old guy for some perspective on my perspective.
Long live 2nd gear!!!!!

The notion that an S is too much for the street is patently absurd. It's a delight. Peak numbers don't tell the story, because the S/GTS cars have so much more grunt off of the bottom compared to the Base. That's not to say that the Base engine is deficient. It's just important to understand that there's a character difference in terms of how the power is delivered.
Personally, I tend to live life switching between 3rd and 4th gear for most roads, but your geography and traffic may vary.
