Default Do you track your car?

I am curious what percent of 992 users take their car to the track to exploit its full use.

I bought my 992 as a dual use car: 4-season daily driver and track toy. I do ~25 track days per year and it is a real hoot to drive!! I love the concept of one car that does it all.

Some people pay for a PPF job that looks like that.

No, but only because I have a dedicated track car.

One day maybe I'll take it to stretch it legs.

Nope, I'm too much of a wimp ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Knowing that there's no way I could get a sufficiently identical replacement makes me very hesitant even with insurance. I know myself well enough to know that if I do it regularly, I'll continually push to improve my pace, and eventually that need for speed will outweigh my skill, no matter how skilled I become.

Realistically I'll probably start tracking my car occasionally next year, after I've done the two day Porsche Track Experience course at Barber in March.

Yep. Took my T to the track while it was still on temp tags (but after break in mileage). It was the end of the season, so only one days so far. Plan to take it to 3-5 days next year.

I have a BRZ track car. The brake pads last forever and the tires are half the cost of the 992. It has aero, all spherical bushings, coilovers, wheels, and track tires.

I'd like to track my 992 but the cost of consumables is too high to justify it.
I wouldn't even try it once with stock brake pads. So I'd have to buy a set of pads and a quart of brake fluid.
I'd probably heat cycle out the stock Goodyears in 1-2 track days and then they'd be hardened and crap for street use. So then I would immediately need a new set of street tires.
Then I'd need a set of Nankangs for the track which I wouldn't want to use for the street so I'd have to get a new set of wheels.
Also if I was going to continue tracking it past those couple of times I'd want to get rid of the PASM for some MCS 2-ways and some bigger brakes. I'm fairly certain anyway

I've been down this path before. If I start tracking the 992 I'd have to sell the BRZ just to pay for the mods that I deem necessary to make the 992 enjoyable on track.

I did track Porsche's own 992 C2S at the experience center and it was pretty good but way too mushy and soft to serve as a track car

Yes, before I sold it that's we primarily had the car for.

Been there and done that with cars that are actually prepared for a track.

Nope. But I have a Spec Boxster track car I use for DE. That said, I understand both arguments for and against tracking a 992. It was built for it, it’s an awesome car on the track, etc. But for me the cost to replace it (even with track insurance), difficulty in getting the same exact options, delay, and headaches associated with replacing a wrecked 992 outweigh the fun of driving my 992 on the track. And as others noted, consumables for a 992 are a significant cost. Even my Spec Boxster ain’t cheap but it’s cheaper than a 992. I only paid $20k for the 986. Plus the 986 has a full cage, racing seats, 6 point harness, fire system , etc. If I total it by stuffing it into a tire wall. Two things to consider (a) I will more likely survive the crash with no, or with less severe, injuries than if I were in my 992 with only the 3 point belts, and (b) I can just walk away from the car and find another Spec Boxster. Oh yeah one more thing, my wife won’t kill me if I wreck the 986, but she definitely would kill me if I wrecked our 992.

Probably TMI for your poll, but I’ve always argued that if you have the means buy a dedicated track car and thrash it, save your nice 992 for date nights with your better half.

I live near Sebring. A fair number of drivers there have older Miata’s dedicated for track duty. They have a great time. Some of those guys are pretty damn fast!
