Default Stone Chips - how much do you care?

I didn't get PPF because I was concerned that the paint might get stuck and peel to the adhesive. Also I saw some installers inadvertently cut through some of the rubber seals as they cut through the PPF to take the excess off.
That said, the longer I drive the car, I'm expecting to get some rock chips. I have a couple of small ones that I've covered with some dabs of touch up. You can't tell too much.

Questions:
1. How extensive are your paint chips so far?
2. Do you care or does is really bother you?
3. Do you know if certain shops are masters at fixing these? If you have any before or after or can share what techniques they use that would be super helpful

Thanks

I PPF'd my 718 when I got it and now I think the money could have gone to better use. My SUV's and Daughters car all have some chips, but you have to be very close to see them even on my 100K+ mile SUV and they never bother me. I also never even look at the front of the 718 as if we're in the same place I'm driving it.

All about the level of OCD the car's finish creates in your head. A lot fine, a little also fine. I haven't washed my 718 but once since December as it's not dirty per se, but also not 100% clean. It bothers me, but then I drive it and it doesn't bother me, although I'm sure when I go places some people thing the car is awesome and others think it's dirty.

enough to get PPF, but not enough to replace PPF.

PPF is by far the best investment you can put on any car that you actually care about not getting rock chips on.

Do I care? Absolutely. I have a TTS. I care very much. My other cars not so much.

It bothers me. That’s why I have PPF.

On other cars, without PPF, I had the bumper resprayed.

And then got PPF.

I have one rock chip, which I got on my way to the shop to get PPF put on….ironic. Anyway, I think for the 911 the rear “hips” are actually the most prone place to rock chips, and the best place to have protected. If you ever had to respray that section (on both sides), it would be a lot more expensive than just a bumper…. also, it’s not just about a chip here or there…. that area can look almost sandblasted with micro-chips….

This is the first car I put on PPF. I read all the threads about PPF pros/cons. Of course there’s no consensus. I decided I wanted it for piece of mind and to get my own real world experience. I used top notch installer in the area. They’ve previously did ceramic and window tint on my other cars.

No…. There most definitely is a consensus. It’s very rare that I find someone that thinks PPF is a bad idea and when I do find someone like that, they fall into one of two categories. The first one is they are broke and can’t afford it and the second one is that they could really give a crap if their car gets rock damage because they’ll just replace it any year anyway. Now granted there are a lot of second category people on this forum but they certainly don’t speak for the majority of car owners. We can thank God for that.

I would add a third category: people who only put 100 miles a year on their car and keep it in their garage 99% of the time…..

Yes I care, have full PPF with double layer on the Hips! Worth every cent and not just for Zero chips, but more for the fact that I don't even think about it.

theres a 4th- people who, while recognizing that ppf can protect a car, they've had ppf before and know that after a few years it starts to look like you have vinyl on top of your paint. And those people prefer to have the surface feel like PAINT and maybe even like to work on their cars and polish the paint and get the satisfaction that comes with it.

I had xpel ultimate on my last car. After like 3 or 4years i didnt care for it. The self healing didnt do anything. You could see the vinyl "scratches" and nothing you could do about it. I said nah for this car.

To answer the OP's question, i do care about chips, and I've gotten a few in 2 years, 5k miles. And even though I'm ocd about the paint (i did my own paint correction and ceramic coat), still dont regret not putting ppf. If I keep this car for 10+ years like i plan to, we'll see what it looks like then and if i regret it. But for now i enjoy working on the paint.

A contrarian view:

I want no part of PPF and wouldn't take it if it was free. I do not want something that will dull with time on my car that may need to be eventually replaced. I want to clean paint not a covering.

That said, I put on only 3k a year and am very careful about being close to someone head of me. A rock chip here or there will not bother me, especially as the car ages. I plan on keeping this car a loooong time.

Brother, you can get a rock chip while driving 2 miles to the grocery store. Ask me how I know.

Wouldn’t take it for free. Yeah ok.

you must fit into one of my two categories I brought up above. Either that or you were just incredibly uninformed on what PPF is, and does.

Yeah, been there. On my TT RS (which I traded early, waiting for my T) I had PPF and less than 2 miles from my house a dump truck went by and I got sprayed with all kinds of small rocks. Ended up with a couple small chips in the windshield but the front end was fine thanks to the PPF. Our 718 has it as did our Macan. Totally worth it IMO.

Lol, I wanna polish and care for my paint. I get that but unless I'm mistaken, rock chips are where paint is missing
