Possible money shift
I hate having to post this question, but here goes. Just like the title of the post, I think I made a money shift in my 21 Carrera 2S, but I’m not certain. Here is what occurred.
1. I was in 4th gear at 5k RPM (redline starts at 7,500).
2. Went to shift to 5th, but instead shifted to 3rd.
3. I let the clutch out, and RPMs immediately hit the rev limiter for 1 second.
4. I immediately pressed down the clutch pedal and shifted back to 4th.
5. There was no tire grabbing or any other physical reaction other than the rev limiter. No grinding, nothing.
6. No check engine light came on and no other lights or codes either.
7. No strange noises or smells.
I drove my car a few miles to the nearest gas station with no further incidents and the car shift like normal. I let it idle and it sounded normal.
I then turned it off for a few minutes, restarted the car, and everything was still normal (no codes, no abnormal noises).
I then proceeded another 75 miles to get home without any issues. The car shifted normally, no issues whatsoever and still no codes of any kind. Everything performed like it should. Had full power, no weird sounds or anything.
But I have this nagging feeling in the back of my mind.
What are your thoughts/opinions?

If you were at 5000rpm in 4th gear, going back to 3rd shouldn't put you into stratospheric revs at all. Without going to the gearing and speed in gears/mph per 1000rpm charts, my guess is that a redline shift in 3rd would bring you back to at least 5000rpm in 4th.

I was in 4th at 5k RPM and mis shifted into third. Which caused the revs to hit the rev limiter at 7500 RPM in 3rd gear.
Then when I quickly shifted back into 4th, the RPMs did go back to 5k.
Perhaps I was at higher than 5k RPM in 4th gear?

These cars are capable of a LOT more than we throw at them. Forget about it and carry on enjoying the car.

Not misunderstanding you at all, trust me.
Look at it like this: You were at 5000rpm in 4th gear or about 98-102mph. 3rd gear runs close to 110mph at redline (7500rpm). If you had been at redline in 4th and selected 3rd rather than 5th then yes there would be a problem.

before, thus the worry.
I’m 50/50 that the car is fine given what happened (no codes/faults and no noises), but that doubt is a pain.

EDIT: And as someone else said, don't overthink it. a missed shift? Yes. A "money shift"? Not by the details given, nothing to worry about at all.

Honestly you will be fine.. This can happen if you hit red-line, do a miss-shift, etc. Even perfect drivers will do this on occasion on track, miss-shift on the street, mis-calculate the red-line by a millisecond, etc.
If you decide to do this all the time, that is a problem, once, twice, a dozen times is likely not going to "hurt" the car. Not great for it, but not going kill your engine either.
3rd and 5th are a little tricking on this gen of 911 (I never had much of an issue on any of my previous generations. But on the 992 you can get miss-shifts specifically from 3rd/5th positions. I typically just let out my clutch a bit specifically in the higher gears, and it will start to rev higher if I miss-shift.. And before I full disengage the clutch (in anything but normal - as the rev match will let you know!), I then know I am off a gear (or in this case 2 from 5th to 3rd).

My gut feeling is if you hit the limiter going back to 3rd from 4th (instead of your desired 5th), you were likely in the 52-5500 rpm range when shifting. A downshift from 4 to 3 at 5k rpm would likely have you around 7k rpm.

And yeah, I wasn’t at redline in 4th when I mis shifted down to 3rd.
Thank you for your feedback.

Were you over 102? Here's some info on gearing. Sounds like you are fine. https://rennlist.com/forums/992/1194...l#post16632965

You would know if you had a real money shift.
Because you wouldn't be here asking us if you had one.
You would here asking what to do after a money shift.
