Engine Rattle - Dealer “giving up”
I have a 2022 992 Cab that seems to have developed a very distinct and relatively loud metallic rattle at low RPMs (1,500-2,500 typically). If rev through that range and hold the applicable RPM, the rattle will be continuous and audible from inside the car as well on the outside from perhaps 10-15 ft away. It sounds exactly like a heat shield rattle.
I took the vehicle into my dealer and demonstrated the sound in front of the SA and the tech, both of which agreed it was probably a rock or other obstruction creating a vibration on a heat shield. Turns out, that was not the case. The sound, apparently, is coming from inside the engine itself. Over the course of the next week, the dealer says they have ruled out nearly everything they can think of (valves, turbos, transmission, etc.), but they admit that they “have no idea” what is causing the sound, much less how to fix it. They told me they conferenced with Germany who was equally stumped. The dealer now wants to give the car back to me saying “either it will get worse and will throw a code, or it won’t and you’ll just have to live with it.”
My initial reaction is that this is not an acceptable outcome. It seems to me that if everyone agrees that there is something demonstrably wrong with the vehicle, they need to resolve it. No matter how long it takes. Telling me to just “live with it” seems ridiculous for a vehicle that costs this much. I know that every single time I rev through that RPM range, that sound will irritate me. Any advice on how to proceed? I could email the service manager, but I suspect he won’t have much else to offer. I also don’t want to make enemies of my only Porsche dealer in town. Should I email Porsche directly? Will they just lean on the dealer, who has already indicated they don’t know how to proceed.

replaced with new motor mounts and still evident
dealer playing stupid and had the ***** to put it in writing that no vibration and or rattle evident

I listened to some of the clips in the engine mount thread and I don’t think that is my issue. Someone mentioned it sounds like “loose lumber rolling around”, which is an accurate description for those videos. My sound (which I will record if I pick up the vehicle) is more metallic and “tinny”. Imagine if you had a license plate loosely bolted to a metal surface and drove over a rough road. Or a thin metal heat shield vibrating against an exhaust muffler. That is my sound. While the ADM sound does seem annoying, this is much more distinct.

Might sound crazy but I’d drive it hard and hopefully it gets worse or something gives and they can find and fix it.
I had a car with a flapper deal inside the exhaust to heat the car up quicker, it ran off vacuum and when it broke it sounded like the thing lost a rod bearing. Once it got bad enough to locate it I was able to fix it but at the beginning it was barely a rattle and only at start up when the vacuum was set to close the valve. It was welded to a spindle and the weld had failed from the factory. Didn’t hurt the car one bit but it annoyed me and anyone in the thing.

I also have this issue. Between 1500 - 2500 RPM, a sort of higher-pitched metallic noise. Reproduced it with a tech in the car for a drive. Said it's normal, has heard it before and these engines tend to "clink and clank" and it's a non-issue. I'm not sold but the car drives perfectly and pulls hard. So I'm honestly not that worried.
I had a really good conversation with the GM at the dealership and he explained he didn’t build the car and would work with Porsche to see if they will take the car back. He said one way or another he would take care of me. He said he would call the rep and have an engineer meet with us to go for a ride but later in the day emailed the paperwork has been filed. I think they are going to take it back. The question is will it be a check and see ya or will I get another slot for a build ? Best case get a slot and drive mine until it’s arrived. Who knows but it’s heading in the right direction. I think they want to avoid the expense of the lemon laws.
