That’s not what I’m saying, as I have PPF on mine. It was $6k, and another local shop wanted $8k. As careful as I am, I knew it was going to get eaten up on the hips.
I’d rather save that $2k to redo the hips in a few years.
Another option is putting one of the magnetic black (or possibly other color) rear hip protectors over the PPF, for now. Then, when you get around to replacing the PPF in a couple/few years, have them add a second layer over the hips that can be peeled and replaced inexpensively.
Shouldn't be much money to replace. I've had some weird pieces get damaged, if my guy has extra PPF laying around that fits he does it for no charge. The last piece on my truck he just made a seam in the middle from the front bumper. I can hardly see it and it didn't cost me anything so works for me!
I do full PPF on my 911s and I double up in that area to avoid having to replace the entire rear quarter every time. Like @pro1200, my stone guard is custom cut and larger than the regular shark fin shape everyone gets.
I have zero regrets not installing PPF on my C2. For me it's more headache than help. They come from the factory with PPF in that spot. I have zero road rash on any of my previous no-PPF Porsches outside of that area that already comes wrapped. That's just my experience FWIW.
PPF is a wear item. That’s why I never understood why people pay $8k-$10k to have it done, especially if you plan on driving it more than 9 miles per year.
Perhaps because its better to wear out PPFn than the paint. For me, I look to protect only the wear areas. Front, A pillar rocker and hips. Like engine run-in, opinions will vary here and thats ok.
65 through gravel... You might qualify to get a Dakar.
You all are funny… it wasn’t all gravel or a dirt road, it was a road that had loose gravel poured on it, so it looked like a normal road, and didn’t feel sketchy, but there were little rocks everywhere flying around. Yes, I could have slowed to 5 mph, but I was on it for several miles, and I didn’t want to add an hour to my trip. (and I knew I had ppf 😂. my understanding is that around Ohio, they put tar and rock chip down on the roads as a way to help fill in cracks and resurface them.
I suppose the Xpel PPF did it’s job and protected the paint. if my paint had taken these hits I’d be really upset…. but I’ve only had the PPF a few weeks and it looks like it’s going to have to be replaced. was driving on a country road and came upon a section that was being prepped for repaving. road covered in loose gravel. was driving about 65mph. Could hear rocks flying everywhere…. this damage is in front of the rear wheels. the hips. It’s already been cleaned. these marks aren’t dirt, they are scratches in the PPF…
Sorry to see this. Admire as battle scars. I covered mine as well but first removed the factory PPF. I installed PPF that covers the entire rear quarter panel and then added a duplicate of the factory PPF on top of the new film as a sacrificial cover just for this type situation.
Try rubbing some isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber towel over it. I have found that can remove some impact marks and dirt/staining that is embedded into the ppf. It may make it look marginally better.
I've got to ask, where the hell do you people drive these cars?? I've done over 100,000kms in 911's across all sorts of roads and never had anything like these sorts of issues.
