911 GTS fixed wing 992
#2
I looked into this as much as I could when I was finalizing my spec. Porsche doesn't claim any downforce improvement anywhere in any literature or sales material I could find at that time. When I asked the dealer to reach out to a rep and ask they said it doesn't add downforce, but does 'very slightly reduce lift, at speed' I'd make the decision based on cosmetic preference if I were you. I went without the wing myself.

I believe it is entirely cosmetic.

Correct, it looks amazing. But after seeing the extra air that the intercoolers receive when the ugly clam shell is open… I wonder about extra heat soak with the fixed wing.
I track my car and as odd as it is I wonder if the active less aggressive wing is the better option. Heat soak is real with this car.

There is a huge, fixed opening where the rear engine cover runs to the base of the wing. And it's always getting air. No heat issues.

And as for whether it's functional or cosmetic, those who have actually replaced the stock wing with the aerokit wing report slower acceleraton times due to the increased drag and downforce at higher speeds. I am 100% certain the aerokit wing generates significantly more downforce than the OEM wing. No way Porsche would sell a product like this that has not been wind tunnel tested to at least generate some addt'l downforce or at least avoid something that creates rear end lift which would be a serious liability.

The SD wing design likely generates as much downforce as the wing on the 996 and .1 997 GT3 (not RS) wing. In other words, not very effective and mostly for decoration. IMO, a ducktail looks better and actually generates downforce similar to the OEM retractable wing.

I agree that they likely wouldn't offer a wing that significantly detracts from performance or safety, but i doubt they have a "significant improvement" threshold. The vast, vast majority of options offered are purely cosmetic with no performance improvement. I doubt the sports design side skirts, carbon fiber mirror covers or executive design fuel cap are performance based options. Maybe the Mortorsport decals actually male the car go faster, but. . . .

my aerokit wing creates so much downforce that I park my car on my garage ceiling.

If you have one, you'll believe in the promise of better performance to go along with the looks you like. If you don't have one, you'll believe they are cosmetic only and like a bad facelift on a good looking woman. this, as with colors, transmission choice etc. can go on for pages with people energetically supporting their choice and anyone else that does as well. As the saying goes, people are not really interested in your opinion. They are interested in hearing their opinion come out of your mouth.
