Trade 992 for Turbo GT?
#16
I am a fan of Porsche SUVs - had a Macan GTS a while back and my wife has a base 2019 Cayenne which will likely be replaced with a new 2024 Cayenne S with the V8. The Turbo GT is quite a beast and reviewers seem to be really impressed with it as a meaningful step up from regular Cayenne variants.
The big downside is that these things and especially the higher spec ones depreciate WAY harder than any 911 and probably your 5 series. If you're OK with that and kind of want a car that splits the difference between your current 2 cars, it's probably as good a choice as any.

I have a 992 S cabriolet and a 2022 BMW M550i and am considering trading both towards a 2024 Cayenne Turbo GT. The dealer is selling the Turbo GT for list, and it would probably be an even trade (or potentially a little cash back in my pocket). I have two young kids with busy schedules, so I don’t use the 992 as much as I would prefer, and certainly don’t explore its limits commuting to work or weekend runs to Home Depot. Consolidating down to 1 car is attractive, and would certainly be logistically “easier” on a day-to-day basis, rather than regularly trying to determine whether I need the BMW’s larger room or car seats.
On the other hand, $200K seems like an awful lot for a cayenne, even for an incredible machine like the Turbo GT. Also, it just seems “wrong” to be trading a 911 for a cayenne. Also considering waiting a year or two, keeping the 911, and trading in the m550 for something electric like the upcoming electric rs6, or Taycan sports turismo.
Has anyone made such a switch to a Turbo GT? Did you end up missing the 911?

I can’t comment on the turbo gt. I also have two kids though and a 992. I went through a series of do everything super suv segment, and I’ll echo others. They are disappointing. I currently just daily the 992 since my kids are small enough to be in the back. I will prob get a second car soon though. Maybe a defender. I haven’t loved the Porsche suvs when driving them. They are good but I love the Land Rover suvs(for being that, a sport utility vehicle).

Think long and hard . Cayenne GT is a beast but it also is a giant , high riding , two ton monster compared to the nimble 992 .

I personally would never buy a Porsche SUV. I've driven a couple of Macans and Cayennes and have come away very disappointed. They really felt nothing like a 911 and, aside from the speed and firmer suspension, felt not much differen tthan driving my wife's Toyota Highlander. If I really needed the interior space, I'd trade the M550i for a cheaper SUV and keep the Porsche.
But if you really want to have just one do it all car, then I guess it makes sense. To me though, the Porsche SUVs have so little sports car feel that I'd rather just spend the money on like a BMW X5 for like 1/3 the cost or an X5M for half the cost of a Caynne Turbo GT. Or better yet, I'd get an Audi RS6 wagon or a BMW M3 Touring if you are in a country where you can actually get an M3 Touring.

No one can tell you what to do, but I can tell you what I would do, I'd keep the 911 and swap out the BMW for a nice SUV around the same price. I like the Cayenne turbo GT but it's so expensive and will depreciate a lot, I'd have a hard time with kids kicking the back of my seat and spilling food in it, I'd leave that for a cheaper but still fun SUV, you could for example get a Tacoma TRD pro for a fraction of the cost, it's got a definite cool factor and no tears will be shed using it to haul kids.

A Cayenne GTS will get you 80% of the Turbo GT for $ 80K less money. That way you keep your 992 Cab. That's what I did, works out great. YES, you will miss your 911 otherwise.

Ask yourself why a top tier GT model is available to begin with (and at sticker price no less).
Then ask, why there are no 911’s available to buy at your dealership.
It’s a VAG corporate SUV with a shared engine.
Keep the 911.
