Advice on buying car with resprayed quarter panel
Hi all. I'm looking at a 2020 that has some cosmetic damage on a rear quarter panel from scraping the side of a garage. It has not yet been repaired, so it is easy to see that the damage is minor and only affects the flat section of the wheel arch. To fix it properly however will require a repaint of the entire quarter panel including the continuous sections that are on the roof and the lower section by the rocker panel. What would you consider a reasonable price deduction for this? Minor damage is on the Carfax for the car due to this issue. Appreciate your thoughts.

Not enough info to properly estimate costs, but enough to know this car would be an easy pass for me. Don’t forget, in addition to the headache and repair costs, it will be harder to sell and you’ll lose money on the back end (no pun intended), too.

^^^^Completely agree. OP, this is important. Whatever price you agree, photograph and video on your phone the whole car, not just the damage. Will assure any prospective purchaser when you come to sell. Good luck

I look at it differently-To me it all depends on the color of the car and the difficulty in getting the match EXACT. Metallic flakes are more difficult to perfect as the angle of the flakes will be different than when applied at the factory.
In other words, I would have no issue with the non-metallic black or red, but would not get involved with metallic silver or agate grey. I would concern myself with how it is going to match after the repaint and not the diminished value.
I would also do plenty of research into getting the best body shop to do the work-do not make the assumption that all repaints come out perfect.

you guys are hilarious...life happens. I bet there are more of you that bought a used car and don't even know someone resprayed it in some areas to cover rock chips, scrapes, parking dents...who knows. The only issue is the carfax...not sure why a scrape like he describes would on a carfax report..makes no sense. Also, if just the wheel arch no good body shop would respray up to the roof like described.

Price makes it right. It depends on what you can live with and the possibility of it always looking like a respray. I would deduct the cost of the repair + a good amount for diminshed value + a bit for risk.
Non metallics are easiest to make near perfect. Some metallics, if not most, are never the same again. On a daily driver it may not matter. This is a tough call to make.

For a minor scrape to the rear quarter in garage,, why would the seller ever have sent this to the insurance company? Seller should have repaired it privately and never get into decrease in sale price nor depreciation..and CARFAX forever. If done right, the OP would have never known it happened.
