I used to be in the mandatory FAL camp, but when I got my name called for a GT3 allocation my SA said it’s no longer necessary for the 992. So glad I trusted him and skipped it. I easily clear standard speed bumps straight on without scraping, and higher ones require diagonal driving.
Have I still scraped my front lip? Of course, but it’s usually a “surprise” which I wouldn’t have activated FAL anyways. Plus I really don’t care anymore, it’s on the bottom where I can’t see and if it really bothers me I can just replace the $200 piece of plastic one day (which I won’t) lol.
GTS will have even more clearance than my 3, you’ll be fine. Also the sooner you accept it will get scraped eventually with or without FAL, the happier you’ll be!
I have an incoming Targa GTS. Specced FAL because I do a lot of road-trips and want the ability to not worry when driving somewhere unknown. Im glad I got it because just drove to my new neighborhood and due to construction, the roads are horrendous.
After getting my car back from the Detailer I've had it for 9 days and have used the FAL at least half a dozen times already. I'm glad I got it. I consider it to be one of those things that's "better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it." Plus it can't hurt if having it if you decide to sell the car.
I had it on my first (purchased second hand) and ordered it this time. Its $2700 on 181k. I've moved since owning a 911 and would hate to get home and scrape the first time. Dealer wouldnt let me take one. Plus its a nice thing for resale. Better to have and not need vs the opposite.
I wonder how many of those who are using and advocating FAL routinely would clear without it? Unless you are willing to attempt a steep entrance without FAL, even though you have it, you would never know whether you needed it.
Question: Does the Surround View front camera help identify when a steep entrance is going to make contact with the front lip?

Question: Does the Surround View front camera help identify when a steep entrance is going to make contact with the front lip?
Yes, it does. When I went to Indianapolis for a Porsche event, the hotel had a parking garage where there would be steep inclines. It would trigger the surround view cameras to kick on, and I could see on the big screen the pavement ahead of me.
I tried doing my research with approach angles with and without FAL prior to my build. If I remember correctly, the standard GTS approach angle is 8 degrees. FAL raises the front end by 40mm or so which brings the approach angle to around 11 degrees. I then casually measured the ramp entrance into my office garage with my phone which gave me a reading of about 12 or 13 degrees.
So the first couple days with the car, my testing went like this:
Started trying to go in straight with FAL off: I did not make it all the way through. It felt the bumper was going to pop off. Scraped the front lip where it's visible
Then tried driving in at a diagonal with FAL off: I did not make it all the way through. It was a tiny bit better but felt the bumper was flexing on one side. Scraped the underside of the lip where it isn't visible
Then tried going straight in with FAL on: Made it through but scraped massively (underside that isn't visible)
Finally tried driving in at a diagonal with FAL on: Also made it through and only lightly scraped (underside that isn't visible). Sometimes I don't scrape now but I wonder if it's because I've eaten away the underside of the lip enough that it now clears cleanly?
It's very clear that FAL was absolutely required in my case.
