CPO/Used 992 - What to expect and pricing insights
I'm currently in the market for a 911, initially started out looking at the 991.2 but then realized I'm very close ($10-15k) from a 992 so I'm now leaning towards getting a 992 (I like all the modern features and looks it has to offer over the 991.2).
I had a few questions:
1) Are there any red flags specific to the 992 to lookout for from a technical standpoint?
2) I'm seeing 992s for around $108-115k for 2020 or 2021 (under 15k miles). I havent followed the 992 values for the past year or so, are these prices on the down turn? Is it a decent buy?
3) Is there a place to decode 992 VINs? (Vinanalytics seems to want money for it, it was free for prior models).
I have a rate lock till end of Jan (around 4% APR), so I'm trying to see if I can snag one now, but also would like opinions on the timing.

Thats a loaded bunch of questions there 2002. Most are answered around the forum. I'll give you my .o2 which is worth exactly what your paying for it.
1) No real achilles heals so far with the 992, but you need to know what you want from the car. It can be a GT cruiser or a track rat depending on options and spec.
2) Prices are moving down, slowly. See four wheel trader on you tube.
3) I've found plenty of free VIN decoders but, knowing what you want is a bigger challenge.
4) My thought is time is your friend right now. Slow down and figure out what YOU really want and then go for the car. It's becoming a long overdue buyers market.
5) Enjoy the hunt

Base Carrera: any exterior color except Yellow and red: PSE + Black interior + 14-way + ventilated seats + ideally standard 19”/20” wheels (PDK + PASM which is standard). I think the thickest tires would give me the best road noise performance.
Ideally CPO and miles driven less than 20k. But if the price is right, I’m okay to sacrifice some of the requirements.
It’s been a lifelong dream to own a 911, so it’s going to be a weekend/leisure drive. No plans to track it. However I might consider getting a ECU mapping done if it’s reversible and doesn’t void warranty or messes with the rev limiter.
I hope the base Carrera in this iteration isn’t considered specially less desirable for some reason.

Outside of looks and tech you should definitely test drive them both.

Thanks for the info! And yes I know what I want But to give you an idea, my requirements are very basic :

Are you worried about the supply bottleneck though? I’m wondering if the recession/war forces Porsche to reduce production and we get more scarcity inflating the prices yet again! I’m trying to figure if it’s worth buying a 992 at around 105-115k or wait in the hopes they hit lower 100s for the 2020 models.

I did test drive the 991.1, but it was a 2013 model with lots of rattle and noise inside, but love the driving dynamics. But I know the 992 is a different beast altogether, I dont think I’ll be disappointed with it given its my first Porsche/sports car.

I do not know if prices will get back down that low again, but I do it think a 5 year old 911 (2017/18) should stay in the mid to high $90s. I am not in any rush as I know eventually I will get a great car. You may not be in the same situation as you are locked into a rate (If I read your post correctly) which may make you want to buy sooner. If you buy now, you may over pay a bit, but if you are happy with the car, does it really matter?
I know a lot of people are concerned about "trade in value" but I am not one of them. Whenever I get my car I will keep it as long as I can and drive it as much as I can. I want to enjoy every minute of it and if that means the value goes down, I don't care. The smile I will have driving the car will be worth it. Maybe I am over simplifying things, I don't know.

Does anyone know of US Porsche dealers that aren't charging over MSRP for new 992s at the moment? I'm seeing some CPOs pop up from time to time in the $110-115k asking range, but not sure if I'm better off with a new build, since my requirements are very basic in terms of options.

Ray Cantena Porsche in Edison NJ is selling at MSRP, but is only selling to local buyers at this time. I imagine their waitlists are huge as well.

My local dealer now shows 4 new 911s in inventory (after showing zero for, maybe years?) so I think things are definitely loosening up a bit!

It seems all of the SoCal dealers are still asking $10k-50k over MSRP. Give it a year and everyone will be at MSRP. I don’t think the pre Covid discounts are coming back anytime some, at least, for the 911 market.

Fields owns Porsche of Jacksonville and has a company policy against charging over MSRP for any car. (Formerly Brumos Porsche )
