Default Annoying parking brake?

Does your 992 do the same? I am not able to use parking brake without P trans position.

What I usually do to save the gearbox from any tension in gearbox during parking is: Vehicle in N, engage parking brake, release brake (car will sit on the brakes) and then engage P. No tensions on gearbox. But not possible in my 992. Always I engage parking brake, car automatically put the car in P no matter if I am in D, R or N, by engaging parking brake it always goes to P. Why? I dont want my car to sit on P stick in gearbox, I want my car to sit on brakes.

I am not sure what you’re trying to do here. The “tension” is nothing compared to what the car ensures in regular driving use.

Maybe I explained wrongly.

When your car holds on P stick in gearbox even in slight hill, there is unhealthy pressure/tension in the gearbox. That is why you have to use parking brake.

To avoid this, the best way is to engage parking brake, let the car ,,sit” on the parking brake and then engage P. In my 992 it is not possible, because I can not release and let the car sit on parking brake, because always it automatically enables the P. Not so great

The parking pawl is not engaged during regular driving. The OP is right, it is usually preferable to have the parking brake holding the car with no load on the parking pawl.

Why can’t u achieve that by holding the brake while shifting to P then engaging the parking brake too?
my 2022 992 engages parking brake whenever I shift to P automatically but it didn’t do this in the 2021 992 model.

Yes, parking brake engages automatically every time I engage P position. But on the hill, I want to let the car ,,sit” on parking brake and then engage P. But it is not the same, because when it happens at the same time, you still have some load on P stick in gearbox, because even after parking brake is engaged, the car makes some small move not very familiar with P stick in gearbox.

It is absolutely ok that parking brake engages automatically with P. But I can not understand why P engages automatically when I engage parking brake from R, N or D position. So, I think I can do nothing with this :-) but 2021 didn’t behave like this

While lit may be a good practice, this seems to me like a solution looking for a problem and is likely hardly worth the effort of this multi-step process every time you park your car. What is the regularity of parking pawl repairs or other transmission repairs based on the added pressure? I have to imagine that modern cars are built with more than enough margin that this is not something worth worrying about.

I understand the concern, because when parking my Odyssey on the driveway which has a slight incline, I prefer to engage the parking brake first.

Otherwise, if you just put it in P, the next time you get in the van and put it in D or R, it’s a pretty loud engagement with the trans.

However, I’ve parked my 911 in the driveway a few times, and never heard this loud engagement.

Interesting, my22 doesn't engage the parking brake automatically when I put it in park - the light doesn't come on anyway. But I do have the same desire for the brake to fully engage before I put it in park. On the 981, parking on an incline, did put the transmission in a "bind" so to speak, and you'd hear/feel the clunk when you shift out of park. No such issue on the 992.

EDIT: And I am able to set the parking brake and let it catch the car before placing the transmission in park... I think.

My 22 doesn’t automatically engage the parking brake either. Is there a setting somewhere to make it do that?

wow I noticed my 22 does that and found it weird since it didn’t do it on my 21. Hmm maybe this is a setting? Vacationing on an island this weekend so don’t have my car with me…

A similar question to this, are there any harm in not engaging the parking brake at all when the car is parked? I have my 992 parked in a flat garage and I seldom engage the parking brake.
Guess its a old habit from driving rental cars for work during the week.

I don’t believe my ‘22 does it automatically. I’ll double check Today, but if it does do it, there is no indicator on my dash indicating such.

Edit: Confirmed. ‘22 No auto parking brake. Was able to rock car back and forth in garage in P.

My 22 GTS automatically engages Parking brake as soon as you put it in Park.

Maybe my SA set this up because he set up the whole car the way he likes it and I never felt I needed to change his choices

Park the car press the P button shut off the car and exit the car. Don’t make it a bigger deal than it is.
