This is all pretty standard these days; in some markets VW’s have set and released the park brake automatically for years. Our ‘21 Mercedes does it too, and some EV’s these days are even doing away with the old ‘start/stop’ button. Just jump in, select drive or reverse and off you go.

I have the same (likely over thinking it) mentality as OP. If I know I am parking on an incline, I will always engage the parking brake before shifting to P gear.
I will need to double check but im pretty sure my 22 lets me engage the parking brake while in D, and I would subsequently put it in Park. I dont go from D to N before engaging parking brake, as OP seems like they are trying to.
I am rather certain that my parking brake does not auto engage when I put in in Park though.

With a manual transmission I was taught (many decades ago) to do exactly the opposite. I put the car in first and make sure the gear is holding the car and then engage the parking brake. So then the parking break is not doing much but is there as a layer of safety.

For the OP, 2021 TT here, this is a not an issue on my car. My driveway is on an incline, so my routine when I park is to pull the parking brake lever with the engine running and the foot on the brake, wait a second for the parking brake to engage, release the brake (you feel the resting on the parking brake) and shut down the engine (which engages P).

I just go footbrake, P, parking brake and when ready to go, footbrake, D and release parking brake. Holding the car on footbrake seems to prevent tension on the P pawl. My MY22 911 doesn't automatically engage parking brake.
