Default Are the Goodyear tires a nail magnet?

Hey everyone,

I have a ‘22 911 C2. Took delivery mid December last year and just recently crossed the 7000 mile mark. Needless to say, I absolutely love driving this car but in the 6 months of ownership, I have had 3 punctures. My partner drives her BMW through similar routes and hasn’t had a puncture once.

Just wondering, is it just my poor luck or are these tires softer/more susceptible to punctures? I have the Goodyear Eagle F1s (20”/21”) and thank god I purchased the Tire and Wheel insurance. It’s $50 each time but almost nobody in my area (Bay area) ever has the tire in stock.

992's do seem to be puncture magnets, although I (knock on wood) have yet to be so afflicted I know several folks with 992's who have. The Goodyear tires don't seem to be any better/worse than the Pirelli's for whatever that's worth.

I’d say it’s a combo of:

wide profile tire, and
tire tread pattern that might tend to kick up objects when run over by the front tires, thus increasing likelihood of the rear tires being punctured

Agreed, wider tires means more potential area for punctures, plus probably a bit of bad luck.

Yes good thing you have the wheel and tire protection. There is a lot of debate here about buying that. My car arrives in 6 weeks and I'm considering it, but have not talked to the dealer yet on cost. Do you mind me asking what the cost and term yours was? And if you remember what the other terms cost, that all would be helpful to me and probably to others. Thanks!

Well, I would definitely advice on getting it if you’re going to be driving a lot. I got it since other people here recommended it. I paid $2140 for 36 months. It covers 8 tires, I have a feeling if this continues I’m going to get my money’s worth.

Well, all new 992 owners have their passenger rear tire get a puncture, no matter what the brand
(seriously everyone seems to get a flat on that tire! Mine was at 800 miles with pirelli tires)

And even though I also got the insurance, I need to go through 4 more tires to make it worthwhile.

Anyway, it happens with this car….

There was a study done several years ago in the US, with data from Tire shops on which tires get punctured or debris/flat in them and subsequently replaced the most. The passenger side rear was the winner by a wide margin. IIRC - 1.) Passenger tires in the US are closer to the shoulder where more debris is located 2.) most of our roads are "crowned" thus sloping for water drainage toward the shoulder (taking debris with it) 3.) The passenger front tire will often times kick it up, while the back passenger tire will hit it and get punctured

The results were somewhat interesting, I believe it went something like - by a longer margin the passenger rear, then the passenger front, next I believe was the driver rear, and then the driver front being the least replaced due to road debris/flat.

if the road you're travelling on has two lanes in each direction, stay out of the far-right/curb lane as much as possible...there will be more potholes and road debris in that lane.

The Amazon answer would be:

"I don't know I don't have Goodyear tires, but I love my Pirellis..."

I may be the winner here…nail in my rear drivers side Goodyear on the way home from delivery in my ‘22 Targa 4S in November. Tire and wheel package claim #1. Good since.

I have a Macan with 6 k miles and 992 C4S with 8 K miles
they share DD duty so travel same routes
just repaired a tire on Macan from nail. It happened to be rear RT
having said that softer summer tires grip harder including nails
