Default Question for those with Surround View

I am apparently genetically predisposed to driving forward and eating parking blocks every chance I get. The best is when the rebar sticks up a little, and wants to rip my bumper off when I back out of the space.

While acoustic parking / proximity sensors might help with "taller" obstacles, I assume the 992 has no stock warnings when it comes to low objects like parking blocks.

If that's correct, does anyone have experience with the Surround View option, and if so, could it be used as a practical tool to help one avoid driving too far forward onto parking blocks? I understand that you can get to a forward camera view, but not sure if it's buried too deep inside of nested PCM menus to make it a convenient driver aid.

How easy is it to activate the forward camera view, and are there any notable constraints or is there high latency when getting an image to appear on screen?

If anyone can confirm, I'd be grateful.

TIA...

I programmed Surround View to the diamond button on the steering wheel so I can activate when I need it. However, it generally activates on its own in all parking scenarios and when approaching those parking blocks. Must have option IMO.

Surround-view helps with this problem a ton in my experience. It should activate at low speed and when parking sensors activate on 992 in my experience. Of course, the best way to avoid this is just back up into the space, you can always get the backup camera and it's generally a better approach angle IMO.

I have 360 surround view, and it's fantastic. Expensive but worth it for me, as I daily drive my Targa 4. It is perfect for those curbs, and will give sufficient warning so you don't hit anything. And it will slam on the breaks if it senses you're about to hit something on the side or behind you.

You can see these in the front Surround view camera. In fact you can see these and the front of the car, clear as day, zero latency, nice HD image. One of the best things with Surround.

Really? Had no idea..

Add me to the list of surround view fans. Makes parking a snap, and will absolutely save you from eating parking blocks.

Thanks for the feedback. Is it easy to turn the front camera on, manually, or does it always come on by itself, at low speeds or in specific scenarios (not sure what AI logic it would use for turning on / off by itself).

Agree re: backing up, though often I meet these blocks when parking spots are marked on the bias / diagonal.

Also, to be more honest, I'm pretty lazy and sometimes backing up takes up too much intellectual horsepower.

Thanks for this. This is concerning for me, because while I like visibility, I detest driver aids that interfere with my driving / control of the car, especially when I'm trying to get within a centimeter or so of something (one of the reasons I prefer a manual over an auto (i.e. the ability to move the car more precisely, with the clutch alone)).

Are you saying that Surround View will actively interfere with the motion of the car?

Or is it possible to use it exclusively as an informational tool?

Thanks again - This is very helpful input.

So, it won't move the car for you. But it will beep a warning, and then that beep will get more "insistent" if it senses you are getting too close for comfort. I'm pretty good at figuring out the sound. And the 360 camera is actually very good, but it takes some time to figure that out too. This is my first car with such a feature, so there's a general learning curve. And yes, it is an informational tool first and foremost. I believe, but am not sure, that the settings can be adjusted to only warn. For me, I've had the brakes slammed on a couple of times in parking situations. It was pretty shocking when that happened, and I didn't think I was close to hitting something, but I later determined that I was. But that doesn't happen too much anymore, as I'm better with the car.

Surround View is probably my #1 must have (non-performance) feature on this car.
Being able to "see" how far away i am from hitting curbs on all sides is amazing, and I'm sure it's saved my front lip and wheels from scratches.

It does a pretty good job of recognizing most parking situations, but I have programmed it into my spare dash button so that I can trigger it at will.

Pretty sure the auto-braking thing is option dependent. Not sure which ones, someone else will likely know.

yes, it will automatically switch on the front camera if it senses an object in front and you're below a certain speed, like 5mph. Failing that if you activate surround and you're moving forwards it will also automaticaly select that camera. Like others I have one of my diamond buttons assigned to surround for just this reason, use it all the time.

You must be right. Surround view instructions in the manual don't say anything about automatic braking. It's probably part of adaptive cruise; that's the only part of the manual that discusses automatic braking.

I need to do the same with programing to steering wheel.

I have the other Diamond button on dash programmed for the Garage door opener. Are they independent??

Yes. Super helpful tip from another rennlister a few days back, just hold down the diamond button to get a list of options and pick one for that button's function.

I was inattentive but surround view and the proximity alarm saved the splitter by a hair. Have surround view parking on the steering wheel diamond. Audible alarm. No automatic braking was activated in this case
