Yes, the Skyway is a wonderful drive, more sweepers than hairpins ... the Tail is overrun by traffic this time of year - the best drives are before and after the holidays, on a dry mid-winter weekday. Enjoy everyone, stay safe out there!

I concur, and feel that the Tail of the Dragon is highly overrated and overrun. Cherohala Skyway is much better, and so is the Back of the Dragon, along with the Devil's Whip and the Diamond Back (which contains the Devil's Whip as it's western leg).....

Has NC-80 reopened after Helene? Hope so, I agree it is one of the best roads in the East. Back of the Dragon is a great road as well but can be a bit narrow in places with loose gravel sprinkled over the tarmac from folks dropping their wheels onto the shoulder. Motorcyclist should take care.

Yes! The couple actually came out and talked with us when we stopped to take the pictures. They were super cool. He said he drives them around pretty regularly and they get a ton of attention.
