Default Madness

I went by the local dealer to schedule my 10000 mile service today. No new cars on the showroom but they had a 2018 guards red carrera with 11000 miles on the floor. Almost identical to my 2021, except it didnt have bose or sport chrono. Vinanalytics said its msrp was 95k. Its on sale for 110k. Same as what i bought new for a year ago. Salesman said he thinks this lack of inventory is going to last 2 more years. Thank goodness i was able to get mine when i did. I live an hour away and have been busy so i havent been by the dealership since picking up my car. I didnt realize how bad it was out there. Madness.

I agree the situation is indeed madness for now. With inflation the highest its been since 1982, this crazy market cannot go on much longer.

Yes, the consensus out there was that supply chain issues would extend well into 2023 and that was before the war.

another madness story
ordered 2019 M5C MSRP 123 K , got 11 % off order , so paid around 110 . That was 8/2018
sold it last year for 86 K when I acquired my 992 C4S .. I considered that great as these things lose 1/2 their value in 2 years
dealer sold it for 95 K .
just got listed for 127 k and which is 4 K above sticker

This is a Lexus new car purchase story from our local Lexus dealer, which always treated my well. My wife wanted a 2022 NX to replace her well-maintained 2006 GX 470 (160k miles with severely rusted frame; yes, "they all do that.") Purchase process: specify desired model, color, options; put deposit down, wait 3-4 months for allocation; a car gets offered to you (may not be your spec); you make a decision to purchase or pass. If pass, it goes to the next person in queue. Repair or wait; my wife couldn't decide what to do, so did nothing. Several weeks go by and I get a call from the dealership out of the blue. A new NX was turned down...was my wife interested? We purchased it. I asked the dealer why I was called as I never placed an order. He said the person the car was intended for turned it down, he called the next dozen people in the queue and no one picked up the phone. He then went to me and I picked up the call. It turns all the people returned the salesman's call later in the day only to learn the car was sold. Truly fortuitous for us. Dealer was excellent. Purchased the NX at list, no ADM, no other shenanagins.

If you've got the means and don't already have an EV, add an EV to the garage. Having an EV will reduce the personal impact of rising fuel prices in the weeks and months ahead. EVs cost almost nothing to operate -- the first 1000 miles on our Mini Cooper SE cost us a whopping $40 in electricity. Add in the tax incentives and govt rebates available on many models, they can be a serious bargain.

The materials used in EVs, and all cars for that matter, are poised to get dramatically more expensive in the coming months as a result of the Russia sanctions. As crazy as this market has been, it will be crazier.

My wife is dealing with the same issue - trading in her 2018 NX for either the NX 350 hybrid or preferably the NX 450 plugin. At the moment these are as hard or harder to get as a 911. Plus the dealers wont consider taking a custom order. Our dealer has same process as you describe - wifey waiting impatiently

PHEVs prices are insane. People are paying over $80k for a RAV4 PHEV. Massive ADM.

Yep - I waited 9 months to get my 2022 911 from Perimeter Porsche Atlanta - picked it up end of December.

Salesman indicated probably 18 to 24 months now depending on model.

I saw this yesterday as I was window shopping "used" models.
https://www.hgreglux.com/used-car/po...for-sale-10548

They even show the original sticker and it has 16 miles on iit.

Sticker is $139,450.

If you look at the CarFax (on the same page), it flips hands, but for what reason is unclear.
The list is now $189,000.

I personally suspect the current dealer scooped the car up from the original Porsche dealer only to try and flip it at an absurd mark-up.

I'd never buy a car with green seat belts.

Covid now taking a back seat. Hardly even reported on anymore. Funny how that works. Fauci now relegated to his basement in his pajamas.
Supply chain will start firing up harder in next 6 months.
We'll be back to normal April 2023.

I'm joking, I have no f* idea when this all will be sorted. Still pondering selling my 991.2 TTS because of it.

The market will never normalize - because the auto makers want it to work this way from now on. No inventories, MSRP prices, no inventory in the pipeline, dealer ADMs, reduced production of ICE cars as they transition their production base to government subsidized EVs, etc. This is the "great reset" for the auto market. Until consumers just stop buying cars totally, just keep the cars they have running, it will not end.

If we accept the assumption that auto makers are like all capitalist corporations your theory doesn't hold true. Maximizing profits does not mean no inventory in pipeline, from a supply chain optimization perspective this doesn't make sense. ADMs also do not affect the manufacturer - it's mostly dealers.

Things will normalize, if anything I feel the lesson's learned through this ordeal will help manufacturers create more agile supply lines and ensure supply meets demand and maximizing top and bottom line. Having no product or not enough product to sell is not efficient.
