HPDE 992
Hey guys!
I got PCA GGR’s race and HPDE schedule for 2022 the other day and I can’t stop thinking that it’s time for me to get back out there. I crashed out in September 2018 and decided that the next time I wanted a separate track car. Yeah, turn 15 at Thunderhill I hit a patch of dirt, tried to correct and ended up hitting the tire wall at 85. Of course I was recording it. Both bags blew and I was underinsured. Underinsured? Man oh man can I tell you a tale… that hurt! Well it’s 2022 now and my wife is speaking to me again.
I bought a 992 4S for the street last year and have been loving it, but it’s like giving a starving dog a rubber bone. Even living in northern Nevada.
So… I am thinking of calling my local dealer and asking about an allocation. I don’t need it until next year and hopefully my current relationship will work. Last time I asked about a GT3 allocation, no go, but that was a year ago. Who knows? I think maybe the S or the 4S might be a more realistic choice allocation wise.
I am thinking that a 992 4S should be a great HPDE car. Get a stripped version. White, PDK, Sport chrono, PASM, RAS and of course power steering plus. I will add a roll bar, buckets and a harness. Run sport cups on stock rims until I eventually buy a set of race rims and appropriate rubber.
What am I overlooking? I think the 4S would make a great platform for HPDE with the right additions.
What do you guys think?

The S is not really up to track duty unless you plan to modify it some. For a track focused car you’re better off starting with a GTS or GT3. The first time out I glazed my rear brakes and can’t find any good pad replacements. Maybe in time Ferodo and the others will make some. For now it seems you are limited to ebc or pagid street pads.
Hey 991.1 Guy, do you go to PCA HPDE events? I am only asking because of what I see on the track. There are plenty of GT3 in the red class but the other classes care all modified street vehicles, mostly older.
Yeah, as mentioned I am unsure that I can get a GT3 allocation. The GTS is just a street variant, so no big difference there. My 991 C4 was a lot of fun but ultimately it needed buckets and a harness more than HP. Still, a GT3 allocation would be nice.

A 4S is not a good track IMHO. Too heavy and what do want AWD for?
Buy a car that already been prepped for the track. Or buy a base Carrera, it's the lightest 911 than a GT3, and add S front calipers and discs. Racing seats, a harness bar and get a tune.

this is good advice. Get a base and use the money to prep it

I use a C2S as a DD and track car. This car is quite capable on the track after a few mods.
I recommend PDCC. I’ve been super impressed with the performance on the track and street. Best of both worlds, keeps the car perfectly flat for max grip on the track along with even tire wear and gives a more compliant ride on the street.

RRich, thanks for the brake pad info. I am not worried about sound or dust at all as long as they preform. I really didn’t mind the stock steels on my C4. Well until that last second…
I will lookup more on the PDCC and plan on talking with the SA about it as well. Superb stuff. Thanks again.

Forget the tune and buy R-Compound tires and lightweight wheels.
Personally I don't get buying a brand new car for track duty, unless you are so wealthy that a couple hundred thousand means nothing. Any street car is a poor track-dedicated car. Ideally you want a tube frame ex-race car, so panel replacements and crashes are easy to fix, something as light as possible, sticky tires and wheel sets (plus one set for the rain) and with all the safety equipment in it including a fire control system. Then a truck and trailer to haul it to the track. So many better choices out there than a new 992.
