Market for sedans and SUVs is larger than mostly 2 seat sports cars. News at 11.

Market for any BEV-not-Tesla is pretty hilariously large. I have a popcorn subscription ready to go for the truck wars.

Move over Panamera. This sedan’s days are numbered.

I'd bet Porsche could sell more 911s than Taycans if they actually wanted to.

They will keep refreshing the current generation until they can no longer sell the gasoline cars. Same thing when Macan EV is releases they will keep producing the gas versions on the existing platform with minimal changes. They will likely only keep the higher performance (high profit) models of the gas cars at some point and everything else will be EV.

Well, not a fan, but check out Murray’s take on YouTube, “Porsche Panamera Dead”? Spoiler alert: yes….according to Murray.

I suspect it will depend on whether Porsche needs to free up the production capability for other models that sell better.

Zero evidence of this. The 911 is much more profitable per unit. They’d be selling more if they could. The 992 line is pretty awesome and they have been rolling out new 911s with ferocity. Different factory lines and totally different platforms so logistical overlap in supplies is going to be minimal. They aren’t cheating the 911 out of Li batteries and magnets to build taycans. The 911 outsold the taycan in the states, but the US is Porsche’s 3rd largest market. Europe and China are both pushing hard into EVs.

The Panamera is a larger sedan and more family friendly. The taycan occupies a somewhat weird sedan niche. I suspect the panamera ends up with the same treatment as the macan with a full bev and ice version rolling out in a few years. Guess we’ll see.

Yea, because Porsche doesn’t want to make more money by selling more 911’s. Good one. 😳

I got no dog in this fight….but this much I know about automotive business decisions…the determination of what to do with the Panamera will be made on production capabilities/demand, fleet fuel economy numbers and model profits.

I don’t normally agree with Murray, but I think he’s right on this issue.

At the moment, yes. Decisions on production numbers are made years ahead of time, when the 992 generation was being designed sports cars were in a slump. There was no shortage of 911s for many years until late 2020/early 2021...if the increased demand persists over many years then you may see Porsche make the investment to increase production.

In the United States, Taycan sales will slow the moment the Macan EV lands. The only sedans that people are buying are EV sedans. So, it was right for Porsche to go after that market, because lots of people who want an actual luxury EV sedan with build quality that you can’t get from a tent. When the Macan goes EV, it will set records for Porsche. IMHO, an EV Macan will have more character than the utterly soulless four banger that they put into the current Base Macan — no big loss there.

As for making money, I suspect that Porsche’s margins on the Taycan are actually higher, probably significantly so, than the 911. VW gave some market guidance on this early on. Powertrain components are relatively simple. There’s more than $100k price difference between a Base Taycan and a Taycan Turbo S with minimal mechanical differences. It’s all marketing and that’s why the first Taycan was a “Turbo” Porsche. The EV Porsche cars and SUVs are literally like printing money.

If you dislike EVs, take comfort in the fact that the sales of the Taycan help Porsche’s fleet CO2 numbers. To be clear, there would be no NA GT3 without the Taycan selling so well. By shifting the rest of the model range to EVs, they’re going to be able to make gasoline powered 911s as long as it is possible from a regulatory perspective.

Well, based on a number of financial magazines, you would be wrong….as of 2021. The 911 is THE cash cow for Porsche due to the rabid consumers, like we find on Rennlist, willing to pay almost anything to get their “dream car”.

The 911 is, and remains the most “profitable” car Porsche makes, and one of the most “profitable” cars on the planet. Thanks to people like us, who were willing to pay $10’s of thousands in options that are standard on most luxury cars, and more than the MSRP…

The Porsche 911 was the most profitable car of 2019. Come 2020, and the Porsche 911 is the most profitable car in the world. According to Bloomberg, the 911 accounted for nearly 30 percent of total Porsche earnings in 2019, even though it made up only 11 percent of the company's sales.”

I don't really care how few 911s are sold - I find more fun in having something unique vs. seeing multiple copies daily.

I’m with you…like the uniqueness…..but “multiple copies DAILY” in Iowa? 🤔 Really?

OK
