The 992 is more of a classic Porsche interior than the 991 was. Porsche did a really nice job on the design elements.

When the 994 is unveiled, there will be folks that will complain that it doesn’t rise to the level of the 992 interior, because this is what Porsche enthusiasts do.

As for the “shaver”, I appreciate having one less thing in a car that can impale you in an accident. Zero complaints from me. They might as well put it on the dash like a Taycan in the 994.

This has been talked about for years now and there have been many debates. Something I have forgotten about for quite some time but it was interesting to see someone actually made a video on it which the OP posted. The comments within the video are an interesting read too.

Plastics aside, this is clearly evident in the shift **** and the cup holders. Have you ever seen the PDK shift **** display at Porsche dealers not too long ago? The display would start with one solid block of metal and would show how that solid block of metal evolves into a PDK 991 shifter. That was really nice to see how it's milled out of a solid block of metal. That's a testament to quality over the plastic bit that comes in the new car (which we have seen many cases of cracking). I get it, some people think the 992 **** is newer, sleek, and more modern than the 991 but the 991 piece fantastically engineered.

Not saying you're doing this, but turning it into 991 guys are haters or 992 envy is the wrong way to go about the topic. Porsche could have retained the higher build quality and made the interior more modern at the same time.

Build quality, not which is newer or more modern. Feels like we're beating a dead horse at this point.

Funny how these things get so dramatized on here. The 991 interior is nothing special. Buttons are creaky. Turn stalk is clunky in use. Trim is very basic in design. Center console is huge swath of plastic. Just because you say it's better doesn't make that a fact. The basic trim in the 992 is nothing special, but it's not like the shiny silver plastic stock trim is all that great in the 991 either.

If people don't like the looks of the 992 interior, that's fine. It's just a matter of personal taste. But all this stuff about the 991 interior being so much better just sounds like typical internet myth making.

The only thing better about the 991 interior are the analog dials and maybe the "shaver" - that is it

Than this....

Precisely. The 992 interior was directly inspired from the pre-996 cars, with a horizontal rather than vertical design theme. Stated publicly by Porsche themselves. They wanted to get back to the 911's 'roots'.

I had a 991.2 and prefer its interior over the one in my 992. I find the 992 to be more "plasticky" and the gauges are harder to read compared to the 991.2 layout.

Jason

P.S.: Also the 991.2 has a nicely finished hinged door pocket whereas the 992 simply has a slot.

I guess I disagree since I am spending 164k on one.

I've been following this thread with interest - when I got my 2021 Boxster GTS 4.0 as a "placeholder" car while I waited for my 992 to be built (it arrives this month), one thing I noticed immediately was the immensely appealing tactile feel of the turn signal stalks, clicky center console buttons, and steering wheel controls.
The Boxster is my first Porsche, and the feel of quality was light-years ahead of the 2019 M2 Competition I had before that and (in addition to the amazing driving dynamics of course) the tactile switchgear is one of the things that really made me feel that the Porsche was special from the moment I got behind the wheel.
I still remember almost a year ago when I drove the Boxster for the first time and felt that heavy resistance on the turn signal stalk and then it clicked into place with a very pleasing "thwack" - one of those great car moments!

I've never driven in or sat in a 991, but I will be curious to see how the 992 switchgear compares since I believe the 718 interior design and materials are similar to the 991.

I have a low mileage, immaculate, 991.1S with PDK which is a DD. Love the car and love the interior. Car is a keeper…..not looking to change. Dealer contacted me because he wants my 991.1S for resale and offered me a 992S allocation at MSRP. I said “No”. He then offered to let me drive his 992S PDK for a few days. So, I did that….. thinking I would not change as I loved my 991.1S. After two full days of driving the 992S extensively, I ordered a 992S but with a 7MT instead of PDK. The 991.1S is a great car with a great interior and I still love it. But, it is 2011-2012 engineering and design. IMHO, the 992S that I drove was better than my 991.1S in every category (including interior) following a 2 day extensive test drive. Just reporting my personal experience and preference…… others may disagree which is fine. But, I was surprised at the difference between my 991 and the 992. I still feel that the 991 is a great car with a great interior; the 992 is a better car all around with a better interior based on the state of current engineering and design IMHO. Flame away!

Of course the 992 is a superior 911. What generation of 911 has not been an improvement over the prior. Nothinr real complicated about this. 911 guys and Corvette owners who own a previous series tend to swear by them until they take ownership of a current model.

The 992 may be a better car than my 2018 C4S but one thing where there has been zero improvement is in the levels of interior noise, specifically unpleasant tire roar which drowns out everything else. I was thinking of 'upgrading' my three year old C4S to a 992 4s in 2020 but after one short drive in an S, I could not discern any improvement. I was disappointed. Then I came across reviews (Harry's garage) of both the base 992 and 992s which confirmed my impressions. That level of noise in the cabin makes the 150k car unusable to someone like me who doesn't track their 911. Yeah I know, I should buy a Lexus or a Tesla.

I had a Tesla Model S Performance and the road noise was horrible at anything over 60 mph. And don't get me started about build quality...

A high performance sports car is likely not the best choice for those who insist on quite and super smooth ride.
