Default Rear tires

I have the OEM Goodyears, 21” rear summers.

I was told at my first servicing that the fronts are still holding up well but the rears are almost in need of replacement, perhaps 1000 miles left on them.

That will get me to only 9000 miles of use on these rear tires.

I drive spiritedly and fast.....a lot. But I don’t track it. Is this amount of wear normal?

Normal based on your driving description.

What pressures? Even wear pattern?

Long tread life is overrated. I love the smell of fresh tires in the garage.

My pZeros rears where down to 4/32” at 9k miles when some metal shavings (in both rears only) ended my time with them so I replaced. And while I have more “fun” with the throttle than I ever tried to in an SUV, I thought I’d make it to 12 or 15K miles - but it wasn’t shocking to me.

The cars are much nicer with new rubber anyway. Get new tires and continue to enjoy the car. yolo.

Sounds good. Replace the rears with matching tires after you've hit the wear bars.

If it helps here is my right rear after 9,000 odd miles, and a couple of track days. Still some life left on it and pretty perfect for dry SoCal roads.

By the way, why is tire tread depth measured in 32nds of an inch? Just wondering, growing up with the metric system we would use mm of course but 32nds seems such an odd choice.

Completely.

The beauty and joys of RWD / rear-engine layout ownership.

Tupperware, that is about the mileage I got on the Goodyear. Mostly curvy roads on my set.

Yes I would say 10K for those tires with your driving is right on.

Just be thankful you are driving the car enough to replace them! I have cars that I replace tires on due to AGE (hardness) before wear. THAT is sad.

Sad

Those people treating these cars like a museum, driving it slowly and washing it more than driving it are doing a disservice to this great piece of engineering

Tupper, I drive mine very much like you and had about the same tire pressures and I ONLY got about 8K on my 21" Pirelli's so that seems about right.

Another variable to consider- rear axle steering.

Is there anything empirical that could hint at how much RAS affects tire wear?

I have about 7500 miles on my Goodyears and at service appointment I was advised that the rear tires should be replaced in spring. 992 C2S with spirited road driving - no track. Have RAS. Miles then will be about 9000 mi. Even wear - tire pressure in low 30s in front and mid 30s for rear. I also own a 991.1 C2S with Pirelli tires and get about 11,000 on rears and 20,000 on fronts.

Great question! I have no idea.
