I'm not even going to be able to get my Base anywhere near its limits, where i live, unless i leave to work at 5am each day. If I lived in rural Kentucky, i probably would have held out for an S,....

Even with "just a base" Carrera, you'll likely find yourself actively looking for new roads to try.

I've been into cars all my life, and had dozens of "sporty" cars; but the 911 changed my whole outlook on how much fun could be had behind the wheel of a car.

Anyone may correct me if I'm wrong but from what I remember the 982 GT4 RS and the 992 GT3 both use the older tranny from the 991/81, which is not fully drive by wire. The 992 uses a newer version of the PDK, which is all drive by wire to accommodate a possible hybrid 992. No mechanical bits needed to emulate a physical shifter.

I wonder if there is a way to retrofit GT3 shifter into regular 992?!

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly - perhaps she'll die!

There was an old lady who swallowed a spider
That wriggled and wiggled and tiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!

There was an old lady who swallowed a bird
How absurd to swallow a bird.
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!

There was an old lady who swallowed a cat
Fancy that to swallow a cat!
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!

There was an old lady that swallowed a dog
What a hog, to swallow a dog.
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!

There was an old lady who swallowed a cow
I don't know how she swallowed a cow.
She swallowed the cow to catch the dog
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!

She's dead - of course!
Drew46’s response is the best one yet. The truth is that every argument regarding the various advantages of the 992 models as you escalate up the Porsche food chain is all relative: relative to your skills and capabilities as a driver, the purpose that the vehicle will serve for each owner as well as the financial resources they choose/are able to invest. This is all a part of the Porsche strategy in that once you are hooked, they are fully invested in helping you part ways with more and more of your money through offering incremental increasing levels of performance/technical capabilities/craftmanship etc. as you move up the ladder. These are aspirational cars and Porsche fully exploits this as they know there is much emotion involved. (Myself included) The result are truly brilliant cars at whatever price point/performance level you choose/able to participate. There is a reason why Porsche makes more money per vehicle than any other manufacturer and thank goodness for that. Greatness shows up in all versions of the 992. Even in the humble little “Standard” Carrera.

There's a $750 option (retrofit-able for what looks like $1400-ish for the parts from Suncoast) for an "aluminum" PDK shift lever. I actually prefer the stock one for the overall aesthetic with the other buttons but this looks very cool as well.

I honestly like the Braun shaver shifter a lot. I like it much more than the old PDK shift lever which I always thought was ungainly. I don't at all miss the ability to use it to shift, as I always use the paddles anyway. I realize I'm in a tiny minority here, but honestly this was a big contributing factor to our choosing a new 992 over a lightly used 991.2.

If I was going to drive a PDK I too would take the standard PDK nub which matches the toggle switches over the taller aluminum version. I get what they are doing and it is fine, and honestly is better than the 991 shifter or the PDK shifter in our Macan.

But then again my S is a manual so not a problem for me. I will say that the manual style shifter in the new GT3 doesn't look great. Tries to look like a manual but isn't.

I am not sure if anyone has watched this video on the 992 base but my impressions are you can’t go wrong with a base it’s plenty fast.

Coming from a 997; 2012 911 Turbo, now, my current daily is a base 992 C2. Yes, a huge difference between the two. Thus, the 992's handling is superb, interior is techy, and I am happy in it.
Cheers!

Ha! That's what exactly one of the SAs told me. That'll I be back later for a GTS, then a GT car 😂

For me, I drive the C2 on the public highway everyday. It is fantasic

I was not that surprised when Matt Watson found there wasn't a huge amount of performance difference between the C2 and the GT3! The GT3 is a bit quicker on the strip as you would expect. I would love one if money and practicality were no object.

In fact I love all the 992 models.

When you are accelerating hard through the rev range it is nothing to do with 375 bhp vs 500 hp. That power all occurs at the top end of the range.

Its all about torque at the lower mid range that gives you the shove in the back. The C2 is excellent in this respect.

The draggy app on my phone has always been pretty accurate. I tells me my C2 does 0-60 in 3.5 seconds without sports chrono. Just like the one in the Watson film

That is pretty flipping quick, it certainly feels as quick as anything else I have driven including a Portofino.

I have standard "small " wheels. In reality they are massive. The ride is certainly on the firm side as it is.

I would definitely not want to increase the firmness by increasing the spring rates, dropping the ride height or increasing the rim diameter.

I would also not want to increase the tyre width, as the roar from the rear wheels at speed is loud enough. Phone calls on hands free are difficult in the 992.

I have driven a 992 on the track. I find it difficult to see how you could get to 50% of the cars cornering ability on the road, unless you were being chased by a Tyrannosaurus like the one in Jurassic Park.

As for the standard steel brakes, they are incredible.

OK, if you are track focused, spend the extra. It will make a difference. I bet driver ability is the overriding factor in lap times though. Otherwise-to me-it is just about bragging rights.

The biggest difference between the C2 and the GT3 is £40,000 when driven on the road. I dont sit there and rev the engine at the lights, I think the standard exhaust sounds fantastic.

I can do alot with £40,000. So I am more than please with my C2.

Just completed a superb 250 mile round trip today over rough small roads and

motorway in mixed conditions.

Superbly satisfying drive.
