Default Targa - Cockpit Wind With Top Retracted

Hi All,

Not sure if this has been covered before, but with a 992 Targa model, do you experience wind "drumming" with the roof retracted and windows up (or down)? if so, at what speeds?

I've been noodling over which 911 model to get. I'm leaning towards a C4 Coupe but more recently considering a Targa. I won't have a chance to drive one before ordering though.

Thanks,

K

multiple youtube reviews say that it is there but not as bad as the 991.2 and if you crack the windows its essentially gone. would love to hear from some actual owners though. from the youtube videos I've come to the conclusion that for me it'll be a non-issue.

I was concerned about the same thing.

My experience, if you crack the window just a bit, the buffeting is significantly reduced. However, I haven't driven it much with an open top at higher speeds just because the wind noise in general is loud. Frankly at 75 with the Targa open, it is tough to hear the stereo. So, anything at 65 or below is great. I sure enjoy the open feeling with the targa open and the huge back window is amazing as it feels like an open cockpit.

I also like that with the targa up, the cabin is quiet. I've tried to measure it, with the roof closed, and with my unscientific method (different roads, tire pressure, speed, etc.) it seems to me to be 9-10 db quieter than the 991, but take that with a grain of salt.

if you deploy the little deflector gizmo on top of the windshield frame it drastically reduces both the noise and the buffeting

Once I pushed the button and the "deflector gizmo" went up, it now goes up automatically (most of the time). With the deflector and windows up, you can easily hear the sound system (at least my Burmester) at unlawful highway speeds.

I agree with this. With the deflector gizmo up and both windows up, I don't have any buffeting. With Gizmo down and windows up, buffeting happens between 45-55 mph. Lowering windows helps a lot. I usually leave the deflector gizmo up all the time. Overall wind noise is loud at high speed >70mph but still tolerable. I just crank up the music. I drive with roof down most of the time and thoroughly enjoy the open air experience. Roof only up when parked for security. Hope this helps.

If you can get one - I’d take it. The car is brilliant on so many fronts…not to say all 911s aren’t cool for sure but rather, a Targa is simply special. The wind noise - flap up OR down is not insignificant but won’t bother you. A lovely car.

Agreed, dip windows for best results; however, no issue overall in decision about what car to buy. I have no regrets.
