Talk me into (or out of) a Targa
#31
I quarrel with the word "far". It is somewhat more open. The Targa has the fixed rear window, so what the Targa gives you is essentially a huge sunroof. My steel sunroof isn't very large, but it lets in ample sunshine and air, and with the windows down, the open air feeling is very pronounced. For the marginal difference in openness that the Targa provides, I can't justify the significant added cost, the added weight, and higher center of gravity.

Are you sure this is the case? Where are you getting this from? If true, it would be an interesting change - not sure how I'd like that look.

I definitely don’t like the look, as the all black roof adds a nice contrast IMO. I’ve asked my dealer to confirm.

That discussion about the roof panels was back in March. At that time the configurator showed body colored panels in front of and behind the glass roof section. That disappeared fairly quickly and ever since has shown the full black roof. I don't think we have anything to worry about. Please let us know if your SA advises differently.

My bad, Okay, then Cabs are ugly and that by itself is enough to disqualify for me. I had a 350Z 'vert until last week. That car looked funny top up, the 911 looks funny top down (he said putting his flame suit on).

- most beautiful body IMO is Targa with rollbar.
- only AWD on Targas but AWD is great when driving mountain roads or anytime it’s raining. And even if it’s AWD, it is still RWD biased.
- cab would offer best open air experience without a doubt. However, targa roof opening is bigger than a coupe with its sunroof opened.
- resale values higher than coupes and cabs (check on 991s)
- negatives of targa : heavier, durability of roof mechanism in a couple of year from now?
- you can open the targa roof on 991 while driving if you install the smart top module, I don’t know if it’s the same on 992s but worth checking. If anyone knows, please share.
In conclusion : I’d choose Targa.

Styling wise its comes to preferences.
IMHO i like Targa’s and feel the silhouette really makes it retain a bit more of the original lines. There’s definitely great visibility.
The other thing it does is put a fixed roll hoop over your head and its the only retractable hard top option.
An old coworker of mine once said “ sports cars should have roofs and drop tops are for cruisers”
Now while I disagreed with a lot of what he said it, made me think. There’s something to be said of saying I know how I drive and that fixed hoop is piece of mind “incase” because of precious cargo. I'm not looking to break any track records so the weight doesn’t bother me too much.
No judgment on Cab’s, it just depends on the driver and their wants and needs.

>>the couple with windows open and sunroof open will be much like a Targa<<
Said the person who has obviously never driven a Targa. Stoopid statement.
I had a 911.50. Loved it.
Have a 991.2 Targa. Love it more.
Cabs look like they’re hauling around a full diaper.
Good luck with your decision.

Now on my third Porsche cab - ‘99 Boxster, 997 Cab, 992 Cab. Before buying the 992 I test drove a 992 Targa. The wind noise was considerable, more (to my ears) than the Cab. With the top up, the Cab is really very comfortable sound-wise. And with the top down, the windows up and the wind screen up, my wife and I can have a nice conversation at highway speeds or listen to music.
I think the 992 Cab has the closest silhouette to the coupe so far, although I find the coupe more pleasing to look at than the top-up Cab. The major difference is the rear window shape. But I also think the open Cab is the best of all.
I’ve heard that accessing the rear seats in the Targa is more difficult due to the targa bar. My grandkids love riding back there. Of course with the Cab, loading the rear seat is really easy if you can lower the roof. You’ll be surprised at the size of stuff I’ve been able to carry in my Cabs.
And while the rear visibility in the Cab with the top up is the worst of the three body shapes, it’s the best with the top down!

Yes, the Targa bar is quite thick so it does remove some headroom for rear passengers. I also felt like if you seat in the rear, you don’t have so much visibility on the sides because the targa bar is so wide.
Cab with open top can allow you to have one adult passenger in the back if they spread their legs perpendicular to the normal seating position.

Allocations, Allocations, Allocations!!!! Like location in real estate without an allocation any discussion is mute. No dealer will turn you away but you have to be realistic in your requirements and expectations.
Porsche's system is complicated but its still the bigger volume dealers that get more allocations and they have a better handle on expected allocations as well. If you are a multi vehicle purchaser from a large dealer your odds of getting a low volume car (targa, turbo s) go up as well as getting it at MSRP. Some dealers asking $50k over for low volume cars.
Current forecast isn't until 2024 models that supply will stabilize and in today's market the only "deal" in 911's is getting one at MSRP.
Now ANY 911 is a great car with detractors and supporters of each variant.
Pin your dealer down as to what he expects, what has he already gotten and where you are in his list. Then buy the car you want, no regrets.
