Thinking of selling your 992? Is now the best time?
I’m not selling, but think this guy does a great job going over all the financials (for his case):

Values for the used cars have yet to peak, so I will stop short of calling the "best" time, but it is a "good" time to sell if you're not driving or otherwise don't need your 992.
At the moment, if you paid below MSRP, regardless of miles, you're going to walk away break even or maybe make a few bucks selling it back to a dealer. In turn, that dealer will CPO it and sell the car for above the original MSRP. (sidebar: It should be noted that this is something that you're hard-pressed to do yourself in a private sale.) The demand for the cars remains huge and thanks to supply chain issues, this situation will be with us through 2022 and beyond. Dealers know this and people are paying those hefty ADMs and Market Adjustments. Are they paying the full mark-up? Not necessarily, but buyers are paying above MSRP... for used cars. For the impatient, there really is no alternative.
Now, before you get all excited about the "no depreciation hit driving experience", here's the kicker... replacing that car will be considerably more expensive in the short term. The used car market is bananas. Real 911 allocations are very hard to come by right now. Yes, there are plenty of dealers willing to take a deposit for a place in line, but unless there's an actual allocation/demand order, it means nothing. If you manage to find a dealer willing to part with one at MSRP, do count yourself very lucky. You're also going to be surprised to see that the new 992s have gotten more expensive. For example, the delta for between what I paid for my 2020 C4S and a new 2022 at MSRP is now about $10k. TEN GRAND.
It's like a seller's market in real estate. You make out great selling your house, but then, get screwed as a buyer. The same thing applies here. Balance in the universe. I won't even get into the inflationary effects within the economy right now.
If you don't drive your 992, don't plan on replacing it, and/or need the cash, sell it. The same for watches that you don't wear, etc. When you do sell, be sure to understand that getting back into either isn't going to be cheap. Long game, it's probably smarter to hold onto either.

All decent used cars are selling at a premium. We just sold a '15 GLK for $10k more than the best offer we got 12 months ago.

Hasn't fall/winter historically been bad a time to sell (Porsches)? I was offered $2k above what I paid for my CPO GT4, sight unseen, from the dealer I purchased it from. A week later, when at the dealer, they offered me 3k less than the phone offer citing "market conditions changed".

All I know is the last dealer I talked to still had no new 911s on the lot, with little prospect of that changing soon. When I asked, they had a pretty significant waitlist for Carrera S models. I’d be surprised if the demand for these cars fell off much in the next ~6 months, even with seasonality concerns.
Time will tell.

In most of the auto industry, to my knowledge, they get shipments and shipments of preconfigured cars from the manufacturer and with typical option setup and color/interior/wheel combos. And they get in cars people have configured and ordered. However, my understanding is that this is somewhat rare in the 911 world, or at least in the 992 world and maybe back a generation or two. AFAIK, all 911s that dealers get are 'dealer allocations'. When demand is not as high, the SAs configure cars to be brought in and sold as lot cars. Porsche doesn't typically send them cars like Toyota or even Mercedes might already configured by the manufacturer. At least not for the 911. And so right now what we are seeing is that SAs have waiting lists for these allocations, so they never get configured by the SAs to be brought in as lot cars as they are all custom order demand.

There are many on these boards that have sold / traded their 992 (all different versions) for some sort of profit. Many of these individuals turn right back around with a post wanting a no-ADM build slot for a highly desirable model. Nothing wrong with that - more power to 'em, but as others have said - right now you gain on one side and lose on the other. You pretty much have to sell and be prepared to walk away for some years until this all calms down a bit to utilize that profit - or wait a long time to get your next car without ADM.

Burning Brakes
I'm thinking through selling my 6mo old 992. I have another vehicle and don't know that I'm enough of a car guy to continue with the hassle of multiples. I do love the car but I love other non-car things too and cars syphon my time. At my location with the incredible volume of sand and salt on the roads during winter I'd be storing the 992 from November to April.
On the one hand I can wait until spring as in my opinion things will be even frothier, but my car will be 6 months older. It isn't opportune pricing driving this but lifestyle. Although getting a year of ownership at little or no cost would feel good.

I think for anyone who is even considering selling their 992; the main question to ask is if you’ll miss your 992 when it’s gone. If no, let it go.
Given the current market. I have a feeling there will be some regret selling.
