The recent thread by russbert showing his 992 getting crunched by a lousy semi driver has me considering a dash cam and possibly a rear cam. I figured a dedicated thread may be useful, I know there are references here and there in random threads but I didn’t find a dedicated thread. Any recommendations for one that allows a clean installation?

I've been using Blackvue dash cams in my daily drivers for 7+ years. They work well. Mine did have some hiccups such as memory card corruption issues, but other than that, pretty solid. Blackvue is a leader in cloud technology with their dash cams. Others have better picture quality. For all dash cam needs, I'd recommend following vortexradar.com. He's the expert when it comes to this stuff.
I tried a couple of cameras in the last 10 years. BlackVue is the one that holds its ground. Don't skimp on the SD card, get the one they recommended. Their labeled SD is a Kingston, I use a 128gb.
If you don't get the proper SD, the camera overheats and go bad. I used the 12v on the footwell and tucked the wiring. The rear cam is a bit wasted as I drive a cab, and it seats by the internal rear view mirror.
Don't forget to check the wiretap laws in your state. There's no privacy expected outside. I shutoff the mic when the car goes into service, just in case.

I've been using a Garmin Mini-Cam, part number 010-02062-00. Very pleased with its performance and extremely small profile.
Since not all potential damage can be done when you're in the car . . . . you'll probably also want to get what they call the Parking Mode Cable, Part Number 010-12530-03.

Mine yanked the plugs and messed with the wiring, more than once. I zip tied the plugs to the body of the cam so they leave it alone. I unplug from the 12V port and let them know.
In my prior car, they removed some trim and when putting it back together, they crimped some of the wiring flat.
I like the BlackVue as well, alas they have all started falling off the windshields this summer. And when that happens on the 992, it sets off the alarm. I've tried cleaning, hot water, you name it.. Going with the 3M VHB tape now...

As a general rule, you cannot record a third party conversation. In some states only one person needs to know (eg TX) in others, all parts need to know (eg Illinois). If the car is indoors, there's an expectation of privacy, specially considering that the camera picks up audio outside of the car. That can be easily considered wiretapping. Given you're not there, even on single consent states this is illegal as no one technically knows about the recording.
If a cop stops you on the road, then there's no expectation of privacy. Same goes for any given conversation taken outside. A conversation taken inside your car may have the expectancy of privacy, I'm sure there's some Supreme Court ruling in the matter.
Bottom line is, the way I see, shut off the microphone to avoid the aggravation. BlackVue has a feature that you run your hand at the side of the camera and it can do one specific function (like a shortcut). One of the functions is shutoff the mic. Or unplug from the footwell.
I have been thinking about a Valentine V1 Gen2 with a Escort M1 dash cam. I realize the M1 is not the best and is overpriced but I think I could power the M1 and the V1 with the same mirror tap. Blendmount sells a nice mounting solution for attaching the M1 to their mounts. Just not sure if the M1 would work with the V1 but you would think it would work.

How exactly do you define "would work with"??? In my mind, both of those are two separate systems, you can effectively choose what you like for each. If you're referring to the power draw, these are all low voltage electronics, so (in theory) that shouldn't be an issue. From a practical perspective, I think having both together is a little "crowded" and you really should try to be discrete when installing a radar detector anyways (the Valentine site calls them "bumper creeps/creatures" or something like that). Put the camera up top and radar detector below and you'll avoid all these issues.
Yeah good points. I just want to use one mirror tap and I like the Valentine V1 Gen2.
All the Valentines have some seriously strong antennas. Don't feel like you have to put it on the glass. As long as its pointed towards the road (but not necessarily line-of-sight) I think you will be fine to keep it down below. And if you do that then your power options open up significantly.
