Dealers can detect an ECU that has been tuned, even with a reflash. The logarithms are extant in the black box.

Whether CA DMV has the same ability to detect a tune is another issue entirely.

But every tune, not matter how covert or how portable, is detectable by the manufacturer. The newest flash used by PAG is keyed to the VIN and looks at CAN bus components to verify that the ECU is in the correct car. The software is no longer local at Porsche dealers, it's pushed directly from the factory real time.

Good luck trying to trick the mothership.

Just about everybody I know in LA has at least 1 guy who’ll pass smog tests for $50…. This will not be a problem for anybody even remotely resourceful.

our state is stupid though… they’ll waste time on this (which will make no difference) while simultaneously shutting down our nuclear plants (the only truly reliable no emission energy production) just to have to fire up coal and gas plants because the wind/solar can’t even close to meet peak demand. Politicians suck.

Yeah and I have probably used that port 1,000 times more than most guys on internet forums. There is quite a bit more to this than knowing what an OBD2 port is.

No there isn't more to it. Plug in a proper scanner and it will tell you everything. A 15 year old in high school shop class knows that.

Ok I’ll bite…Quite a bit more huh? Care to elaborate on what that is for the class?

Thank you to California for going to such great lengths to make sure the air that makes it to Utah is clean.

My favorite CA vibe is all the angst the ruling class seems to feel around "droughts." I mean, the majority of the state is desert, and every new development waters the grass, and uses resources not readily available, yet cries of "droughts" always...duh. Really? As a rule, we humans in the USA are the most arrogant crowd on the planet. We really think we matter. There's nothing we cannot fix, lol. Hey CA...the droughts were there first, haha!

I've only gone outside to exercise twice in the past two weeks because of continued moderate air quality from fires and emergency dirty power generation.

And while I'm on a rant, I'm all for clean energy adjunctively, it is premature to make it 100%. Ask Texans what they thought about it last winter when wind power froze literally and figuratively.
In California we are now activating coal burning plants and dirty diesel generators because of the deficit of clean power.
Another California oxymoron.
Granted, performance ECU tunes are a tiny fraction of the problem.
Don't those same wind turbines work fine with cold weather packages in places like New York? Seemed like Texas just opted to not get that equipment? Sounds like the areas that took their last winter storm seriously like El Paso were largely unaffected but the areas that ignored the warning signs ran into those issues. Wonder why CA constantly gets crapped on for mismanagement but states like Texas get a pass when most of the state was sitting there without power for days from one storm.

Moronic drivel. Largest and strongest economy in the US, most valuable companies of any State, highest in R&D investment by far, and property values reflect why people all over the US and the World want to live here. But don’t let the facts get in the way of your political nonsense.

As regards the topic, long overdue, but I’m not confident they’ll be able to enforce it very well.

I'm always amazed at the hate some folks in the US show towards California. I mean, many countries have friendly banter between different regions or cities but this is on a whole different level. It's not as if everywhere is perfect.

About half of the country views CA like it's the USSR cause the state doesn't want you to modify your turbo diesel F-650s to billow out smoke like a 19th century locomotive, is restrictive on firearms, and at least tries to tackle things like public healthcare. This is like spitting in the face of that group of people and offends their sensibilities and makes them root for the state to fail at any opportunity, to the point of gleefully conversing about wildfires raging out of control whenever it happens. Makes me wonder how often the people who do so also cheer for hurricanes and tornados that devastate communities in the southeast or if humorously discussing people losing their homes is a partisan thing.

Many folks don't realize that many many other state have just as strict, if not stricter, emission and ECU tuning rules as CA, as well as all the other social stuff CA get's flack for.

Deep down I think folks hate California because the weather so damn nice all the time and the whole Hollywood celebrity thing. I lived in CA for a while many years ago. I left to pursue career opportunities elsewhere, still regret it. I loved it there, especially the ability to be skiing in the mountains just above LA in the mid-day and then be back at an open air beachside restaurant in Venice for dinner that night. There is no other place on earth that I have found that offers that. Santa Fe NM comes close.
