Default Making the Shift

I turned in my ‘17 C2 Cab week as trade for a new 992 (on order). At first, I was going to stay with PDK, but after taking stock in how I used (and didn’t use) my previous 911, I decided to stretch my budget and switch to a 7MT C2S Cab.

My reasons (in no particular order):
  • located in rural southwestern Ontario and the only real traffic jams I encounter are my occasional trips to the city.
  • not my daily driver: fair-weather driving for the most part.
  • under-used features of PDK: launch control, sport plus
  • PDK-only features that were dropped from my C2 build (ACC, Remote Park Assist) made the price jump to the S less dramatic.
  • hey, why not?
I should be clear that I’m in no way knocking PDK and do not want this to turn into a PDK vs MT debate. There are enough of those threads already. Let’s celebrate that Porsche is one of the few sports car manufacturers still giving us a choice (though maybe a little more limited than before.

Has anyone else switched up from their previous car? Perhaps you had a manual car and decided to switch to PDK for the 992? What were your reasons?

I previously had a 2011 C4S cabriolet manual, which I really enjoyed as my weekend driver. I reluctantly sold it about 5 years ago, and I have grown to miss it. Currently, I have an Audi S5 cabriolet automatic, and it is just not the same thing. I am currently contemplating trading in my Audi for a new 2022 C2S cabriolet manual to enjoy the 7MT, which I understand is outstanding.

Congratulations! Both transmissions are brilliant. It just comes down to personal taste & use case. I chose PDK as I plan to track a few times a year & I personally still find engagement paddle shifting. I also prefer my MT to be in a low HP NA car. Like an air-cooled 911 for example. I’m currently looking at a 964 5-speed.

Good choice. Funny how 'daily driver' and 'manual transmission' have almost become mutually exclusive. I've had many MT daily drivers, it makes the daily drive that much more fun

The manual transmission on the 992 is the most incredible thing on earth. Personally dont understand why anyone would pick the pdk. Get a Tesla if you want something for traffic

Congrats, hope you enjoy your 992. Either transmission is fine, both excellent examples of their type.

Yeah. I dont get it at all. I've daily driven every manual I've had for over 30 years, mostly while I lived in Southern Cailfornia driving the crappiest, most crowded freeways in America. No better or worse than commuting in an automatic IMO. Actually in most slow traffic situations, I preferred manuals b/c I can just have one foot on clutch one on accelerator and creep along whereas in an automatic I've have to constantly pivot my foot back and forth btw brake pedal and accelerator and that felt more tiring than driving a manual.

Nothing wrong with either gearbox, no wrong answer.
Manual is engaging, fun, very easy to use day to day.
PDK is a techno marvel that fits perfectly with the car in either day to day or spirited driving.

Having driven manual rally cars and manual road cars (and vans) for the last 25 yrs (since passing my test) I feel you hit a limit in torque and power where the human becomes such a limiting factor and the semi automatic boxes pick up that slack, all be it at making things slightly “PlayStation”.

Plus I’m getting older and lazy, so when someone says “manual is the best”, it probably is for them, but I can’t be bothered to stir porridge any more…. Lazy!

Just traded in my ‘07 997 6MT C2S with 105,000 miles. Not quite a daily driver, but I commuted into NYC often enough with it for both business and pleasure. Replaced it yesterday with a new-to-me ‘20 992 PDK C2S with 1,100 miles. I’ve only driven less than 200 miles (I had to pick it up about 120 highway miles from home), and while the PDK is really nice, I do miss the MT. Not sure if that will stick (see what I did there?).

This is my plan too. I like manuals in lower HP cars and Im currently looking for something. I'm happy with PDK in my 992S because the car is so fast and easier to daily in rush hour. I can simply use the car more often so it was worth it for that.

My feelings exactly, but I think most automatic drivers would be hard to be convinced. I find it very tiring to be constantly using the same foot. And left foot braking is not very good.
Luckily, at this point, I've got zero commute.

Yeah my prior car was 991.1 PDK Carrera S and new one replaced with is my 992.1 7spd Carrera S. Light years difference between the two cars in transmissions. PDK was great and just easy to drive but much less engaging. Sports Chrono was nice for Sport Plus and Launch Control but utilized it only when I felt I wanted to experience it on the occasional ride home out in the open road...would pull over and wait for the little traffic to pass on some isolated road then launch the Carrera into oblivion. Was really amazing and fun but nothing I used daily. So when it came to my current likely last Carrera given increasing cost/complexity and just purchasing priorities...I chose to get the manual car as I wanted the engagement that comes with driving a manual. As for daily driving, I don't daily it so don't have that problem (my Audi RS5 SB and soon to be Taycan CT4 will handle that) and am not in daily rush hour traffic so that doesn't bother me....could I do it in rush hour heavy traffic? Yes the Porsche MT is that good you probably wouldn't notice it...but it is a personal choice I think as many have said.
