I think the thing that Nick hits, and just my opinion, but get your SUV or sedan in black, get your 911 in a color other than black.

I agree that the jet black is soft and gets scratches and chips easily, metallic black would be more durable. I have jet black. I would go for metallic if I had the choice.

I had not planned on an "A-B" comparison but I tried to find the 2 closest pictures I could find. The photo below is my 11 year old 970 Turbo in Gloss Black. It still has shine and depth and looks good to me but the gloss is not like it once was. I recently had the car paint corrected and ceramic coated and it made a remarkable difference in the depth of the paint as shown in the second photo.

I also had the windows and rear taillights tinted which changes the appearance of the car but does not impact the depth of the gloss after 11 years.

The metallic black does a better job hiding swirls and dust. It never quite achieves the level of perfectly clean non metallic black, but the metallic looks better after you’ve driven the car for 10 miles after a wash.

Does anyone know the reason non-metallic black is so soft and susceptible to chips?

I have owned 2 Cayennes. A 2011 Cayenne S in metallic black and my current 2020 Turbo in Black (A1). You will get chips in the paint regardless even if you have PPF.

The metallic black is very difficult to color match no matter how good the body shop is....... Just a suggestion.

I suspect all four of the free colors are equally soft due to having fewer layers of paint. Black just is more apparent.

I prefer Black (non-metallic). My CGTS, GT4, the 718 base, incoming Cayman T, and Macan have all been Black. Metallic isn't my thing. It shifts colors, can look dusty, and takes away from the overall look of black.

Almost every car I've owned has been Black. I appreciate other colors, but I also know at some point I'd regret not getting black.

This is my 991.2 GTS in Jet Black Metallic. It looks very "glossy black" under many/most lighting conditions but you can see the metalflake when up close as shown on the rear fender in the first picture.

I would go black vs the metallic. If you are going to be brave enough to get a black car you may as well go all-in. Nothing looks better than a perfectly clean black car.
