Default Thoughts after first 640 miles

Given 11 miles were on the odometer and about 390 or so were added driving up from Anchorage, means I've put a wee bit over 200 miles on her since April 23. Here are some thoughts.

* I keep playing with the content/display of the gauges to make up for the fact that the outermost two are totally useless since you can't see them. Maybe combine two into one gauge as the current approach is not really of any use.

* It would be nice to be able to dump more data on the speedo gauge (than Speed 1 and 2) for example: boost or other data that you didn't want as your top 4. Case in point above, since I can't see range in the far left gauge, I placed it in general overview but I had to leave out water temp. Yes it's on the far right gauge, but you can't see it from the driver position. How this got by their QA...?

* Got the rear wiper, alas no washer. Could have added one in the stalk not to have an ugly blip on the roof, as it is if it's mud but no rain you can't use it.

* Could use more lateral/thoracic support going around curves - miss the old Recaro seats

* Added a black rear fender protector given the amount of dirt thrown up onto them

* Nice surprise got an NA map update today confirmation - I was wondering what the red xx% number was on the top menu bar of the PCM - shows download progress

* The PCM takes much too long to boot, meaning if, for example, you assign a diamond key to HomeLink that you hope to use before you die of carbon monoxide poisoning waiting to open the garage door; you aren't going to make it. Result is I just clip the original remote to the visor and use that. WHY they had to do away with a perfectly good location for HomeLink and dump this into a PCM function...

* Rain sensor is ultra conservative. At the slightest road or windshield moisture it warns you to switch to WET mode. Not sure how this works in winter when those sensors will be under 3 inches of snow

* Trying to figure out how to raise the seat belt height, I'm sure it's something obvious I've overlooked.

* I'm still amazed at the fuel economy. Granted I've not pushed it beyond 4k RPMs but very good fuel mileage and glad I'm not regretting sacrificing AWD for the extended fuel tank getting near 380 miles or so per tank.

* Wonderful power and acceleration and I can't say enough about RAS and PDCC they glue the car to the road

A wonderful driving experience, looking forward to more fahrvergnugen

Great points, in particular, the Homelink. A complete fail IMO. I also just use the original remote but keep it in the armrest compartment.

You mentioned lack of lateral support in the seat. Which did you get? I sat in the 14 and 18 way seat and, surprisingly, it seemed my lower back felt uncomfortable in the 18 way - the side bolsters were fine if I opened them all the way. I’m wondering if it’s just a matter of adjusting them properly and letting them break in. I chose the 14 way for my spec, but I do drive hard. If you’re saying the 18 way is slightly lacking in lateral support I’m concerned about the 14 way.

No, sorry I should have mentioned it, I got the 14 way. It's the upper body support that is lacking. The lower is OK, even if I find the actual seat rather hard over long and bumpy roads.

The HomeLink is an abject failure and reminiscent of Audi's eigenfrequency TPMS solution; an answer to a non existent problem. In the rush to over engineer you get this unusable "upgrade".

Concurrently with multi-threaded/multi-processor code you can and should be assigning priority to them enabling the completion of certain critical modules ahead of others. It is truly irrelevant to wait until the "ambient light" module has loaded and settings retrieved while you're idling in the garage waiting for the HomeLink to awake.

Another very "irritating" issue is the looks I (well the car) get(s) from younger...women. Very annoying and distracting I must say...

Wet mode prompt seems the opposite on mine. It came up once, terrible road conditions, otherwise it’s has stayed silent.
I’m pretty sure the wheel wells need a good amount of water in them too for it to prompt you, not just a dusting of rain on the screen?

^ Yeah, I’ve never once been prompted to wet mode since I’ve owned the car. Of course, mind you, I’ve never driven it in rain. I have, however, driven it when a light amount of sprinkling was happening. I guess that alone is not enough to trigger the wet sensors (which is probably a good thing)

Regarding the OP’s comment about fuel economy.....

If you are doing a break in, that’s basically why. Once you drive this car the way it was meant to be driven, you will see that change quickly

^ Younger women do notice the car, but so do young men. And older men.

I also have had the opposite experience with wet mode. Mine requires consistent moderate rain to trigger wet mode prompt.

Luckily don't really care about the latter two.

But a very light rain or even a little moisture on the road triggers it. Could it be that I was in Sport or Individual mode which makes it more sensitive? But yes, you actually have to drive it, it's not a Ferrari, rain, snow, mud (at break up time) or worse it's what I spent a fortune on and why I want to drive the car and not fret over whether it's got some dirt on it.

As I mentioned I'm curious as to how it will behave in winter and snow conditions and if there's a way to disable it. I don't track the vehicle and I'm fully aware of when it rains and the need to change driving pattern not needing a display to remind me. More solutions looking for problems...

Another issue I forgot to mention is the inability to adjust the seat belt height. This is TRULY lame and uncomfortable.

Not round here, Unless you have a Pagani, 918, La Ferrari etc. you’re just another lump of metal getting in someone else’s way.

I'm not sure I understand the degree of outrage over the outermost gauges not being visible. To see them, all you have to do is move your head a few inches to the left or right. It's a little clumsy, and I would have preferred gauges that don't require you to move your head-- but really, it's not a big deal-- particularly since the leftmost gauge is a clock (redundant with the one on the PCM screen and Sports Chrono clock) and outside temperature. How often to you need to check the outside temperature? The rightmost gauge showing the gas level is a little more concerning, but again, how often do you need to check your gas level?

I don't get it. I keep hearing this over and over about the 992 but my 9 year old Turbo S is exactly the same. You can't see the right and left gauges as a driver. I just move my head to see them. What's the big deal? It is what it is... and it's been like this for a long, long time.

Great, a poor design let's leave it where it is, heaven that we should question...

If we take Owings comments:

I have to lean over (not a few inches) to see them. Yes, it's a little clumsy and something an ergonomic design would have taken into account. So since the left hand is a clock and temperature why have it there at all?

As to how often do you need to check the temperature? VERY often Owings. I have a 30 degree temperature variance due to thermal inversion from my house to town in winter, so yes I want to check my temperature as often as I need and something that is available in most vehicle unobtrusively. Again you can dump this onto to the PCM as part of your home screen. So all in all the left side gauge can be entirely done away not just put up with as a poor design.

Ahhh the right hand gauge, yes it's a "little" more concerning, but then again how often do you check your fuel? Given where I live and let's say I take a ride to the arctic circle I only have one gas station. But hey, we don't need that either as we can just take a reading before we leave and then do the math from the trip computer in our heads as we drive. Again I solved that by placing the Range function in the general view sacrificing water temp. I then configured two separate views that covers most of the stuff I need and I switch between Custom and Standard view to get data I'm interested in. So I guess we can eliminate the right hand gauge as well. So now we're left with three gauges that are clearly visible.

I'm not being a hard a**, I'm saying it's a poor design. Whether it's been there since the S90, 356, 912 or whatever it's a bad design. If you can't see it then eliminate the two gauges. Allow more data to go into the speedo that can't fit into the 4 choices and that way you don't have to lean around the cockpit trying to see the outermost gauges.

But we all have our pet peeves (like an non adjustable seat belt tensioner...)
