Default How do we improve the exhaust note of the 992

Obviously, I am a huge Porsche fan. IMO they are the best all around sports car you can buy. On most occasions, I prefer to drive them over exotics I own. My only issue is the awful exhaust note of all non GT cars post 991.2. When I bought the 992 TTS, the dealer told me it was a must to spec PSE since it was the first time ever offered on TTS and it sounds "awesome." The reality is its terrible and no different than PSE on my 992 Targa 4S.

Does anyone truly have a great sounding 992? What have you done to achieve it?

^ I think the PSE sounds good, frankly. Is it a Ferrari F458? No

But I hope to finally install my Soul Sports cats when this Arctic hellhole of a February finally passes!

I know others here have changed their exhausts, and we have had a few threads about this topic

I dislike the sound of my 992 S as well. My 991.2 with PSE and sport cats was perfect. The 992 with PSE and sport cats is no where near as nice sounding. I am looking forward to whatever soul is working on exhaust wise. I am also half tempted to buy the akrapovic slip on (which to me is NOT worth 4K) just to get more sound. I love how this one drives. I love the speed. But man the exhaust blows! And mine clicks like a MF'er which drives me nuts too.

992 TTS has GPFs. I don't know how much it truly mutes the exhaust, but it can't be doing it any favors on sound.

Soul sport cats and maybe Akra slip-on? Capristo? I'm sure other options will come to market in due time.

I remember you posting about this issue not too long ago. Did the service department offer any hope of resolving the issue?

I heard the sound clips of Akrapovic and I couldn't tell any difference. Techart allegedly is good but at 7k it should be substantially better.

Great video. We need to wait for aftermarket headers, in addition to exhaust and cats.

Three separate dealers all went for a ride with me. two of the three heard the noise. They looked perplexed as to what it was. Which made me feel it was not normal. And then all three of them told me it WAS normal. 1 of them said they recorded the sound and uploaded it to Porsche who then said my motors recording matches what it should sound and look like on some sound graph. Another one told they drove another 992 on the lot and it made the same sound, so it must be normal. And the final one acted like they heard nothing and that I must be hearing things. And since I saw some (not all) others on this forum saying theirs does it too, I gave up. Figured if something breaks, I will take it in. Oh yeah! sport cats made it much louder. But the increased exhaust sound is worth it.

The video Akra posted demonstrated a noticeable difference to my ear, but certainly not worth the money to me personally.

Unfortunately, I think most good solutions will be pretty darn expensive. Time will tell!

I've personally been enjoying my iPE setup. It's much louder and deeper than stock, especially with the valves open, and the burbles are much easier/last longer. That said, when not in Sport drive mode or if you turn off Sport exhaust mode, it's still entirely reasonable - there's still a slight hum, although I almost never drove it like this on factory so I couldn't even tell you how much of a difference there is. Of course, I never even need to drive like this with the new exhaust, either - the whole point of getting it was to enjoy it.

They already exist from iPE.

Last night I watched this YouTube video on the manual 992; you can clearly the hear 'our' crickets when he drives off at the start of the video. In a PCNA press car, same one we see on other YouTubers videos. Still haven't taken mine in, COVID and all that, but man you hear it loud every time you drive the car.

Personally, I've never found any 911 -- GT or otherwise, and any generation (997 and onwards) -- to sound all that great.

I think it's just a matter of physics and mechanical layout. A flat-six will never sound as good as a V8, and given the rear engine layout the 911 is handicapped from the get-go.

As to GT cars, I for one love the sound of my 991 GT3 at 9k, but anything below 7k sounds pretty pedestrian, and anything below 4k just sounds like a garbage truck with a broken muffler.

We're very much looking forward to starting development on a rear exhaust(s) for the 992 platform next week! We're weighing our options. We're considering a large diameter system designed from turbo back to produce maximum power without being too obnoxious. We're also focused on a valved system to give you the mild and wild experience that our 991.1 Carrera system is known for. We'll launch a development thread when the time comes.

Bigworm- I had the ticking issue so bad with a 14 C2S that at 8k miles Porsche replaced the engine and game me 11k. Then I traded it in for a 15 GTS.
