Default code reader solutions for 992

Hi,

Looks like most shops don't have capacity to read codes from the 992s due to PIWIS3. Does anyone know of any user level tools that can read codes for the 992? Looks like the dealer is the only game in town to read codes thus far.

best

Bring a case of craft beer to your local Porsche tech and he'll read whatever codes you need with the new PIWIS-III

Read to what extent? I bought a cheap BT OBD reader/app and it works pretty well - gives me codes if/when they pop up. It’s obviously not PIWIS level stuff, but it was only $50 all in.

Depends on the code and whether it’s generic/categorized on the internet. I don’t know to what extent PIWIS explains codes, but this dongle can handle industry standard ones:
Amazon Amazon

it also lets you clear codes and get some real time data.

There are literally thousands of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). No DTC will tell you or anyone else what is wrong. A DTC simply identifies a circuit that is producing a value that isn't within an expected (programed) range. This also means that there can often, and some might say usually, be problems and failures that do not result in any DTCs being set.

The joke is that they are called Diagnostic Trouble Codes because they can get you in trouble.

Here are two fairly good web sites that the curious may find of some value:
A Layman's explanation of DTCs: https://obd2pros.com/dtc-codes/
An Alpha Numerical List of DTC's by its alpha prefix and numerical value: https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/

None of them are the proprietary Porsche PIWIS, however.

You would need to get the Proprietary Codes from someone at Porsche. Someone at a Dealer may have access to a complete list they might be willing/able to share. This could be either directly from materials on-hand or within a Porsche proprietary network and/or from a Porsche Service Training School. Also someone somewhere might have published them on-line on a forum like iATN. At some point Mitchell or AllData may be able to publish them, assuming they do so on their DIY platforms.
