911SC or 992?
Long story short - in the process of possibly selling my 1978 911SC targa. I’ve been discussing it amongst friends & family - which brought into question another option - maybe I should consider selling the 992 instead?
I made the decision late this past week that I just don’t have enough time with business trips & life in general to keep two 911’s in the stable. The 992 is used primarily for weekender trips & point-A to point-A driving. I’ve now been considering keeping the ‘78 for that job & letting the 992 go. I custom spec’d the car & waited a long time for it... which will make letting it go a hard pill to swallow. 😔
Believe it or not - my head tells me the 911SC - but my heart tells me 992.
Financially my head is in it for the 911SC - but I have no attachment to it.
The 992 is an expensive toy - but my heart is attached to it.
911SC - worth $35k with 174k miles
992S - stickers $152k with 2.5k miles
If someone was in my position - which 911 would you keep & why?

I encourage you to keep the car you most enjoy driving. That’s what these wonderful machines are for, and life is short.

Both so beautiful generations of the same animal, but such vastly different at the same time. Life is already so short, why give up a 911SC especially one that you have sentimental history with? KEEP BOTH

Have any leaks from the Targa roof? My '71 911T leaked like a sieve, never found from where. I'll second Marants2270's comment. FWIW, I'm keeping my 2008 V8 Touareg until I die and the 992 (the 992 can't tow worth sh*t and I need to go fishing with my 27' camper...) ;-)

Just speaking for me, I would keep the 992.
To my eyes, the 911SC Targa is sort of an eyesore.

Your Targa actually looks very nice, but your 992 is gorgeous. Stick with the 992 unless you need the money.

To be fair - not all air-cooled cars are the same. How updated is the SC? Is it bone stock with 40 year old suspension components, rubber and gaskets, etc? Because an air-cooled car that hasn't been sorted is a miserable car to drive.
Of course, the opposite is true. A sorted, older 911 has a fizziness and immediacy and responsiveness that modern cars lack.
If your SC needs a lot of work and you don't love it enough to spend the time/money/headaches involved to get it fixed....

Financially speaking, sell the 992 as you will continue to lose your a$$ on a modern Carrera. Pick up 992 GT3 Touring.

I’ve had a lot of old sports cars. I love them. They all have such great character, but they are such a pain to own. It’s best to spend the bucks up front to sort it out. Check out Bring-A-Trailer to give you any idea of what these can go for in good shape. Every classic sports car I bought and sold was about an even deal, so I never lost money.
I would spend a little more time with the Targa to help you decide. You’ve hardly had any time in it.
I am still on the search for another sports car to add back in the mix. I am not sure if/when I pull that trigger. I wish there was a sports car club like the boating clubs. You buy into the membership, they have a pool of cars to take out, and they keep and maintain them.

I'm going through the same thing with girlfriends. I'm at the point where I can't date both. It would be easy to just keep the younger one that sends me naked photos (the 992). But the 911SC has less potential to screw up my life. So I'll probably go with the 992.

I have way too many cars but will always have an 80s aircooled P car in the fleet
Something special about these cars
If you can swing it....

With regard to the 911SC, you say, "I have no attachment to it". That being the case, why keep it? I would bet that if you get rid of the 992 that you waited months for-- the car you say you have your heart in-- you will regret it. If, a couple years down the road, you find out that you really miss the 911SC, there is a pretty robust used market for them, and you can always get another. Finally, if driving dynamics are of any interest to you at all, the tail happy, lightly powered old car just can't compare to the 992 which, as you know, is one of the world's greatest automobiles.
