Of course they knew the console would need to accommodate a manual shifter and couldn't move off the centre console; my point is that the new console and the PDK lever share a design aesthetic with all the other controls on the console and the centre stack. The manual shifter - and especially the boot - look to my eyes like something you'd find in a test mule...functional, but certainly not elegant. I expect most owners of manual gearbox cars will disagree with my assessment, which is fine by me. I'm in the apparently small camp that finds the interior of the 992 a masterful piece of design work, including the standard PDK selection lever.
To me it’s the PDK versions of the console that looks like a compromise with all that empty space and the forced ‘floating’ section around the lever ; it should be on the dash and the console space used for other purposes.

The vehicle development ( and this might be considered the quality connection ) is closely connected to the Audi AG sub group.
Not that any of this matters one iota , the defective parts observed by some simply should not be present in such a high cost consumer product .

...but to support the previous suppositions of quality issues connected to being part of the VW group , the 992 is made by Porsche AG , which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the VW group.

Saw a pic of the 2021 Panamera with a reasonably good looking shifter. The shifter looks to have the Manual slide over function like the 991 PDK. This would certainly be a good choice for 992 next gen. At least it does not look like a shaver looks like an Audi parts bin piece though. I don't know if you can use it as a shifter in place of paddles like the 991, probably not. But it looks less likely to have the cracking issue discussed here.

No cracks on mine and the piano black is holding up as well. June 2019 build, Sept 2019 delivery, coming up to 16k miles.

Well the GT3 PDK gear selector is so much better looking than the little shaver that seems to be cracking. I sure wish they would use the PDK selector from the GT3 for the mid cycle refresh of the Carrera.

Well I want my Hurst T handle shifter with the electric brake lock like I had on my 68 Roadrunner. That imitation shaver is an insult. I still have the shifter, wonder if I can retrofit....I just KNEW it would come in handy one day and TOWMBO wanted me to part with it when I sold (why oh WHY did I ever sell that car...???) it in 1973 when we moved to Europe...

They can, question is do they want to. It's just a bigger switch than the 'nubbin'.
