Default Hip Protection

Alright, I know this topic has been somewhat beaten to death, but what are you all doing to protect the wide hips of the 992? I'm considering full front, rocker panels and a custom piece on the "hips" to protect from rock chips and ceramic coating the car for that gloss look. But I'm nervous about what the hips will look like in terms of having that PPF line visible since I wouldn't be doing the entire car. Anyone have pictures of their PPFed "hips"?

You should consider just doing the whole side. Seriously. Done right you won't notice ANY lines and it will solve any concerns you have.

Is that what you did? Do you have pics? The shop I'm going to does custom cut pieces but I can't figure out how I'd do the side without seeing lines

Hardly noticeable & won’t catch nearly as much debris as a vertical seam like the factory dog-ear. Also won’t yellow.

They did one giant PPF piece for me. It goes from the A pillar all the back to the rear quarter so there are no seams.

Doubling up on the hips...whole rear fender is PPF, then another layer on top in the same size & shape as OE piece. I'm not sure if the guys who did the PPF used the Porsche hip piece, or cut it themselves. In 10k km, I'd estimate about 12-16 visible hits (6 or 8 on each side) already on the OE-sized piece. When it starts looking ratty will peel it off and lay down a new one, avoiding the cost and hassle of redoing the whole fender.

If you're going to PPF the hip or side area, just PPF the entire car.

I recommend doing the full rear quarter panel and rocker, wrapping around to the A pillar (one piece) , and then double layering a piece the same size as the OEM one on top (as others have said). The hips are very wide and the front tires will throw debris at them, some of that debris will land higher than door handle height, so only going halfway has some risk. As ipse said, if doing the full read quarters, it's not that much more to just wrap the entire car.

This was on my last 992. I went about 3” higher than OEM cut on my new one. I have it aligned with the door handle

The less PPF on the car the better IMO

Keep in mind. A PPF cut for the entire rear quarter will have more seams than an extended cut like mine. Seams will be all along the entire edge of the window moulding.

Side skirts also help keep the rear quarters clean. Never had an issue.

Beat the factory chip guard to death then replace it with XPEL. Unless you cover the entire car, there will always be seams. For a non collectible/not rare car, a proper full PPF install is an iffy value proposition and you’ll find yourself wanting to redo it in 5-6 years — even with “self healing” it will weather.

I currently have one car protected by XPEL and two that are ceramic coated. I’ve gotten past worrying about keeping the cars perfect. If you drive and enjoy the car, there will be chips, there will be PPF damage. It’s all totally okay.

No, I didn’t do the rear of the car or the doors. I did the front end, leading edge of the roof, rockers, and the rear quarters as described, Then I did Modesta over all of it.
